However, I would say this story provides a present-day insight into how large companies operate. Aside from the naming of a few main characters, I couldn’t see how this related to Poe's short story. It would have been better if the writer had used their imagination more by creating original character names and completely changing the title! Rated 3/5 Stars •  Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/06/25 Full Review Jacob B The director has used in the past Shirley Jackson and Henry James’s classic ghost story novellas as nothing more than a launching pad for his own original stories—stories that basically just use the title and not much else, throwing away not only the plot but also the thematic elements of those tales altogether. The “adaptations” were “The Haunting of Hill House” and “The Haunting of Bly Manor” (based on “The Turn of the Screw”) and in each case the end result was decent enough as an original tale, but were something quite a bit less as adaptations. With this particular series, director Flanagan has simply gone too far afield and tainted the name of Edgar Allan Poe and his (arguably) best and most famous short story. As with the previous series, this in no way resembles the literary work on which it is “based”. This is a laughably bad series which thematically is more akin to the film “Seven” than to anything resembling Poe. “Usher” is a campy melodrama with dialogue that makes “American Horror Story” sound Shakespearean by comparison, acting that is at best simply pedestrian and features scares more akin to those found in a carnival fun house and revels in unnecessary gore.
