Nina Li Coomes The Atlantic In Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher, the preservation of mood pays proper homage to the author’s words. The show’s social commentary, in turn, allows a retelling of an old story to resonate powerfully in our current moment. Oct 31, 2023 Full Review Judy Berman TIME Magazine House of Usher also dares to bring Poe into the most contemporary of contexts... Oct 27, 2023 Full Review Leila Latif Guardian Mike Flanagan’s final Netflix offering is a spooky, grisly, sumptuously gothic treat Rated: 4/5 Oct 20, 2023 Full Review Pallavi Keswani The Hindu Flanagan pushes his own creative limits to experiment with fresh approaches. But as with most experiments, the person conducting it tends to tread carefully. Nonetheless, the show promises a unique watch, just ahead of Halloween. Jan 19, 2024 Full Review Aditya Mani Jha Firstpost For fans of horror and adjacent genres, The Fall of the House of Usher is a delight from beginning to end, proving once again Flanagan’s reputation as a bankable showrunner. Dec 20, 2023 Full Review Aglaia Berlutti Hipertextual For his Netflix farewell, Mike Flanagan transforms Edgar Allan Poe's classic tale into a sinister version of greed. However, between the horror and suspense, the result falls short of his previous adaptations. [Full Review in Spanish] Rated: B- Dec 19, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Mx S Utter perfection! I'm a huge Edgar Allen Poe fan since I was a kid and I LOVED how this short story was drawn out to a full series with each of the elements bringing out others of Poe's works and weaving their own individual narratives into the broader story. Every element is fantastic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/25/24 Full Review Mike P Over-rated satirical crime drama from Mike Flanagan; about the downfall of a mythical "Usher" pharma family; plays like a second-rate Succession knock-off. (And it doesn't really have anything to do with the famous Edgar Allen Poe story; Flanagan is clearly just using the title since he thinks it's cool)...The acting is over the top; very self-conscious, and not convincing; the writing is melodramatic; and the wall-to-wall music is annoying. My question is; why do we need a PHONEY pharma series like this; when we've got shows like Narcos and Dopesick which so brilliantly tell the real story? Flanagan usually does much better than this!! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review Erik S An entertaining combination of weird, deep and well-thought of. Several people write that the "mystery" is solved early, but I don't think the series relies on the a mystery. I think it is quite clear for the viewer quite early (even from the title of the series) what is going to happen, and it is like seeing a self-imposed trainwreck happening in slow-motion. Small insignificant-looking actions and scenes in the series turn out to be of vital importance later, well played by the actors, and beautiful themes that take the classic Poe stories and twist them to fit a new setting. Don't expect to see the source material adapted truthfully, but expect to see the source material adapted in an well-thought of and entertaining way. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/10/24 Full Review Tim O Started as an interesting mash up of a wacky range of Poe tropes. Looong way from the actual source material - at least in terms of the 'Usher Curse'. But wound up as whole cloth unsubtle bolt-on of rando-Poe-references onto the Sackler Family/Oxycontin saga. If you came for the original story, you won't find it here. I did keep coming back to it, and saw it through to the end... Entertaining enough. But the the heavy-handed modern-isms, right up to the end, kept jumping up and provoking the viewer right out of buy-in. The modern hand would adroitly reach in and assert some silly modern affected baloney into the proceedings, and I'd and shake my head and say, 'who thought *that* was necessary to the story'? [shrug] Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/07/24 Full Review Hernán R First, the series looks gorgeous and the acting is pretty good as you would expect from Mike Flanagan by now. However, the series relies in a mistery that you can solve by episode 2 and what's left is only seeing the deaths and scares (which are scarse, althoug effective). Add to that the forced "representation" and a pretty heavy handed message at the end (that sadly detracts from the good message of the majority of the series), it ends up being a mixed bag for me. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/30/24 Full Review Fiore G Great serie but I think I enjoyed it cause I got all the reference by Edgar Allan Poe's book s Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review Read all reviews
