What to Know

Critics Consensus

Every bit as florid and sleazy as the industry it seeks to satirize, The Idol places itself on a pedestal with unbridled style but wilts under the spotlight.

Christina Newland iNews.co.uk Lily Rose Depp stars in a knee-jerk celebration of hedonism made by a reactionary voyeur with a creepy gaze. Rated: 1/5 Sep 18, 2024 Full Review Lillian Crawford Empire Magazine The Idol starts out strong but soon melts away after some mild provocation. Rated: 2/5 Dec 12, 2023 Full Review Richard Ferguson The Australian The Idol doesn’t work. It’s lurid and sleazy. And it looks like the blokes are to blame. Aug 15, 2023 Full Review Damon Wise Deadline Hollywood Daily However it turns out, Depp is quite rivetingly game with, to put it mildly, a highly sexualized performance that also is grounded and often vulnerable, discomfitingly addressing the fine lines between porn and art, power and exploitation. Nov 14, 2023 Full Review Susan Granger SSG Syndicate Even with its obvious allusions to self-destructive Britney Spears, the tawdry plot is too plain, the narrative disjointed, and the dialogue dreadful. Rated: 3/10 Sep 12, 2023 Full Review Joe Reid Primetimer The Idol [...] is desperate to deliver the veneer of something objectionable in order to provoke the kind of outraged reactions that can push TV shows from buzzy provocation to heated conversation topic. Myri P The series depicts the predatory nature of the showbiz machine and its psychological repercussions on the souls of those within it with a rare honesty. It is unapologetically raw, refusing to excuse the industry, romanticize fame, or sanctify the star as a tragic victim. Instead, it holds up a clear mirror to the exploitative, humiliating, and spiritually corrosive mechanisms of the system, showing the abuse and the mental illness it generates without polish or disguise. It's no surprise that making it was chaotic, and that so many reviewers and other parts of the machine spoke out against it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/05/25 Full Review Rose Y I think people didn't give this show a chance because of a viral clip of the weeknds "acting". With that said. There are some unnecessary scenes, you'll see. The twist wasn't earned and there could be more depth in the characters. I truly believe the need to appeal to more "mature" audiences can kill a show before it gets a chance, perfect example here Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/26/25 Full Review Fay W I loved this. If youve ever followed the weekend and his music, raw, beautifully tragic, pure depth… You’ll love this! As if they didn’t do another season! Maybe bad marketing. Shame… But I’m here for it and the weekend, the other artists talent and Lilly Rose Depp’s timeless beauty. She put on a great show! Damnnn shame we don’t get to see the whole concert! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/15/25 Full Review Audience Member Rewatched this show and I find it rather underrated. It does not have the maturity level of Euphoria, but I think that's the point. A lot of these characters are mentally sunted individuals who occupy a high status in Hollywood. It's brash, it's crude, it's funny, and has some good drama. At the end of episode 3 and the entire first episode we get that mature take on this story with struggles of the past, trauma, and questions about image and boundaries. It's also very funny, sometimes unintentional *as the Weeknd walks through the mansions gate majestically with his own music playing in the background. But then you have Eli Roth, who's lines are always perrfect and perfectly delivered. He brought a bit of a Tarantino-verse vibe to this show. His Hunter Biden line was hilarious. Hank Azaria is pretty cool in this, seemingly one of the only genuinely "good" guys. There is a twist, which was decent. I liked it, but I do think there are other ways to end this story that could've been even better. It's a fun summer watch, watch it with a friend, enjoy a beverage or toke it up. Thank you!! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/28/25 Full Review Gustav T Groundbreaking show, love it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/17/25 Full Review Cassandra R Worst and getting worst in every episode, lily is just ok, but the weekend n jennie blackpink can not acting at all..
