What to Know

Critics Consensus

Every bit as florid and sleazy as the industry it seeks to satirize, The Idol places itself on a pedestal with unbridled style but wilts under the spotlight.

Christina Newland iNews.co.uk Lily Rose Depp stars in a knee-jerk celebration of hedonism made by a reactionary voyeur with a creepy gaze. Rated: 1/5 Sep 18, 2024 Full Review Lillian Crawford Empire Magazine The Idol starts out strong but soon melts away after some mild provocation. Rated: 2/5 Dec 12, 2023 Full Review Richard Ferguson The Australian The Idol doesn’t work. It’s lurid and sleazy. And it looks like the blokes are to blame. Aug 15, 2023 Full Review Damon Wise Deadline Hollywood Daily However it turns out, Depp is quite rivetingly game with, to put it mildly, a highly sexualized performance that also is grounded and often vulnerable, discomfitingly addressing the fine lines between porn and art, power and exploitation. Nov 14, 2023 Full Review Susan Granger SSG Syndicate Even with its obvious allusions to self-destructive Britney Spears, the tawdry plot is too plain, the narrative disjointed, and the dialogue dreadful. Rated: 3/10 Sep 12, 2023 Full Review Joe Reid Primetimer The Idol [...] is desperate to deliver the veneer of something objectionable in order to provoke the kind of outraged reactions that can push TV shows from buzzy provocation to heated conversation topic. Gustav T Groundbreaking show, love it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/17/25 Full Review Cassandra R Worst and getting worst in every episode, lily is just ok, but the weekend n jennie blackpink can not acting at all.. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/11/25 Full Review Mab P three stars for the hot cast. this is not a love story, but actually a fucking disturbing one. it tells a story of pop star jocelyn -- her lonely, depressing life and the pressure of being an idol. no one treats her like a human, but a fucking cash cow. being manipulated and assaulted all her life by her mother shows why she has no self-love or self-respect and can't decide for herself, which is why she always chooses toxic relationships. i thought there's fucking progress when she ended her last toxic relationship with a fucking pimp, but she gets back with him and even introduced him to the whole world. toxic love is the new sexy, huh? i get the point - jocelyn is vulnerable and depressed and lonely and all the sad things but she needed to continue smiling because she's a star. but the film should have given her a fucking character development, because without one, there's no fucking story worth telling. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/18/25 Full Review nakita d At times, I found it difficult to watch, and I didn’t love it right away, but the longer I stuck with it, the more engaging it became. Some moments felt forced and awkward, and the character development lacked the depth needed for me to truly connect with most of the cast. The pacing was a bit erratic, and the plot meandered, though it eventually tied itself together. That said, the discomfort it evoked was the kind I can appreciate in the name of art. I actually wish there were a second season so I could explore the supporting characters more. I keep thinking back to this show—both unsettled and intrigued. For that reason, because it falls into the “so bad it’s good” category, and to bring up the overall rating, I’d give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/13/25 Full Review Audience Member tbh the weekend should just stick to music , in my opinion the characters are over sexualized and it's just cringe and disgusting to watch the show like thiss Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/03/25 Full Review Zahara B honestly it was just gross Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/16/24 Full Review Read all reviews
