Part Two – The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst

Next Ep Sun May 5 Documentary List
87% 31 Reviews Tomatometer A groundbreaking documentary directed and produced by Andrew Jarecki and produced and shot by Marc Smerling (the Oscar nominees behind "Capturing the Friedmans") delves into the strange history of real estate heir Robert Durst, long suspected in the still-unsolved 1982 disappearance of his wife as well as the subsequent murders of family friend Susan Berman and neighbor Morris Black. It features an extended, revealing interview with Durst himself, with whom Jarecki developed a unique relationship following the release of "All Good Things," Jarecki's 2010 feature about Durst's life starring Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst. "The Jinx" results from nearly a decade of research by the filmmakers, who expose police files, key witnesses, never-before-seen footage, private prison recordings, and thousands of pages of formerly hidden documents. Mike P I know this is one of the most critically acclaimed true crime docuseries ever, and I know this is going to sound like blasphemy, but I found it really boring. I had to rewatch the opening episode like three times, and the story still didn't sink in. There's too many talking heads stacked up, one upon the next; and they should have varied that up with re-enactments or something. The idea, that this is one of the slickest serial killers ever; so slick he's got everyone thinking he's a "jinx"...Is an interesting one; but the producers don't sell this well enough. Overall: Not Recommended 👎 Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/27/24 Full Review Secret S Part two is off to a fine start and leaving us wanting more. Jarecki is a master storyteller, and Durst remains a fascinating subject. The less we see of Jeanine Pirro clutching her pearls at the injustice of it all, or any injustice for that matter, the better. I might buy her "oh, the humanity" bit if she herself had clean hands. Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) Andrew Jarecki returns as director, complete with jailhouse calls from the always willing to engage Durst to play, but as expertly as this is assembled you can’t call it essential. May 2, 2024 Full Review Amber Dowling Globe and Mail The Jinx Part Two feels like the ending this true crime doc always needed, one that gives new insight into two important camps: those who protected Durst and those who worked tirelessly to bring him to justice. Apr 29, 2024 Full Review Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) The Jinx Part Two can’t recapture the oomph of its first instalment but it still has an interesting story to tell in a genre that’s past exhaustion point. And that’s not an easy thing to achieve. Apr 26, 2024 Full Review Andrew Anthony Observer (UK) While most criminals have learned to say nothing in police interviews, in the US at least the lure of the TV camera seems to loosen the tongues of even the most ruthless fiends and their helpers. Rated: 4/5 Apr 29, 2024 Full Review Alberto Carlos Espinof One cannot help but be fascinated by a story that, although it is not that shocking (and six episodes may be too many), manages again to keep the viewer glued to the screen. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 3.5/5 Apr 23, 2024 Full Review Joel Keller Decider While The Jinx – Part Two is still worth watching, it feels not nearly as essential and compelling as the original series was, and some of its more meta moments left us scratching our heads.
