Critics Consensus

Grabbing onto thorny moral questions with its bare hands, The Last of Us' second season is a challenging expansion that retains its predecessor's superb performances and verisimilitude.

Dominic Baez Seattle Times The pieces are there, but they’re scattered, unable to form something truly memorable. Jun 10, 2025 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode and Mayo's Take (YouTube) The chemistry between Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal is magnificent... their dynamic has been the heart of the show. May 22, 2025 Full Review Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) Often these middle seasons can feel like a weigh station, an impatient stopover until the meat of the work in the final act but The Last of Us gifts the audience with many sublime moments that make it more than worthwhile in the meantime. Apr 22, 2025 Full Review Allison Rose FlickDirect The Last of Us: Season 2 blends heart and horror, delivering gripping storytelling, rich performances, and stunning technical precision. Rated: 4.5/5 Oct 8, 2025 Full Review Jeff Beck The Blu Spot Season two of The Last of Us may run only seven episodes and have a slightly slower pace than its freshman outing, but it remains an excellent step forward for what has been quite an incredible adaptation of the popular video game series. Sep 22, 2025 Full Review Jared Mobarak Hey, Have You Seen ...? It really digs into the nature of one side’s freedom fighters being the other side’s terrorists. The more you stop seeing your enemy as a human with the exact same impulses and motives as you, the less human you become. Rated: 8/10 Jul 18, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

bob t disappointing Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/01/25 Full Review Ben N I hated playing most of Last of Us 2. It was brutal, and the series in no different. The only criticisms I have... Abby should dbe played by a bulkier actress. I love Kaitlyn's portrayal, she just doesn't exactly match up with the image I have of Abby, from the game. Also - why cut the game into two seasons? I get it, but I sure hope it is not another 2 years for this one to come out. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/27/25 Full Review Joel L Compared to season 1, season 2 is bad, like really bad. Its nothing like the game and it feels rushed. Alot of pointless sideplots and conversations that lead nowhere and adds nothing to the story. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/25/25 Full Review Rotten P The Last of Us Season 2 is a gripping, emotionally charged continuation that pushes its characters — and viewers — into morally complex and heartbreaking territory. Bella Ramsey delivers a powerhouse performance as Ellie, navigating grief, vengeance, and the weight of her choices with raw intensity, while new and returning characters deepen the world’s emotional stakes. The series balances harrowing, edge-of-your-seat action with quiet, intimate moments, exploring the cost of survival and the fragility of human connection. Visually stunning and narratively ambitious, this season solidifies The Last of Us as one of television’s most compelling post-apocalyptic dramas, leaving a lingering impact long after the credits roll. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/21/25 Full Review Kane M This was such a disappointment! It appears the entire season was designed to trash Joel (literally and figuratively), and Ellie (figuratively), either to death (Joel), and/or to death by a thousand-character-diminishing cuts (Ellie), just to set up Abby and Season 3 for success! An odd choice! Destroy the likeability and respectability of the protagonists of Seasons 1 & 2, to promote the likeability, respectability, and ultimately the acceptability of the lead character in Season 3, who just happened to have earned the ire of a large segment of the fan base, by viciously murdering the lead character of Season 1. Bang up job! Only in Hollywood! You can't make this stuff up! Half a star from me, because of the tremendous let down from the stellar Season 1. I did not expect to watch 7 episodes of a sequel season that clearly is designed to rubbish the characters, intellect, competence and motives, etc., of two beloved characters from the first season, in order to make their antagonist (Abby) shine in comparison, in the forthcoming next Season 3! The Ellie of S2 is not recognizable, when compared to the admirable and impressive (even if perhaps not always likable) Ellie of Part II of the game. While some may not have liked Part II Ellie, no one can deny she is a force of nature, and/or fail to respect her! At least grown-up game Ellie was a formidable and most worthy opponent! Season 2 Ellie (the character not the actor, who is just fine), is a pale shadow of Part II Ellie, and a total mess, and a complete shamble! It's such a shame the narrative of S2 took this quite disappointing downward turn! Joel, Ellie, and the rest of us, deserved so much better! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/21/25 Full Review Boni E A horrible adaptation! Ellie was mischaracterized, and rendered dumb, reckless, clueless, feckless, impulsive, ignorant and incompetent to make Abby look better in comparison! Fat chance this character assassination, has of ever making me like Abby! Bang up job guys! Destroy the lead character of S2, in order to promote the lead character of S3. Real smart, NOT!
