What to Know

Critics Consensus

Grabbing onto thorny moral questions with its bare hands, The Last of Us' second season is a challenging expansion that retains its predecessor's superb performances and verisimilitude.

Dominic Baez Seattle Times The pieces are there, but they’re scattered, unable to form something truly memorable. Jun 10, 2025 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode and Mayo's Take (YouTube) The chemistry between Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal is magnificent... their dynamic has been the heart of the show. May 22, 2025 Full Review Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) Often these middle seasons can feel like a weigh station, an impatient stopover until the meat of the work in the final act but The Last of Us gifts the audience with many sublime moments that make it more than worthwhile in the meantime. Apr 22, 2025 Full Review Jared Mobarak Hey, Have You Seen ...? It really digs into the nature of one side’s freedom fighters being the other side’s terrorists. The more you stop seeing your enemy as a human with the exact same impulses and motives as you, the less human you become. Rated: 8/10 Jul 18, 2025 Full Review Louis Skye (Ronita Roy Mohan) Stereo Geeks (Podcast) Season 2 took it to a whole new level with the characters. We already know this world, so here’s some more danger. You think the infected are scary? No, how about real people and the monsters they are? That’s what I loved about Season 2. Jul 17, 2025 Full Review Zosha Millman Polygon The Last of Us season 2 is a much-needed expansion on the story of The Last of Us Part 2, with a particularly strong characterization for the core players of the season. Morty S They ruined such a plot, and everyone who doesn't know the original story shown in the game now thinks that it was just as disgusting and empty. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/08/25 Full Review Kevin V Se queda algo corta a la primera temporada, pero no deja de ser algo buena en partes Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/08/25 Full Review M. D Someone please help me undestand why the showrunners, writers, directors and whoever else was involved with the decision making chose to make the characters so unbearably annoying and utterly stupid. I could barely get through the first episode without uttering obscenities at the TV and it basically became a "Hate Watch" for me the rest of the way. It's so disappointing that they turned a promising series into a total piece of garbage. The production value is top notch but the writing and characters leaves a lot to be desired. Ellie is totally insufferable and with Dina it's like a post apocalypse Dumb & Dumber with very little common sense between the two. Also, the need to make everything woke is getting tired. I love that Hollywood strives for diversity and inclusion but you do not need to make it the entire theme of your show, especially one that is based on mushroom-zombie monsters. I hope that they fix this hot mess in Season 3 but I'm not holding my breathe after what I just suffered through. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/07/25 Full Review Hailey C Season 1 was excellent. It was a gripping drama about how adversity impacts human relationships. It was well-written, well-acted, and a technical masterpiece. Long, Long Time made me cry. What the hell is this? I guess the theme now is… what people deserve? Plus, some character decisions and developments are extremely forced. However, my biggest criticism is killing off Joel. Joel was the perfect counterpart to Ellie: the mature, practical adult to the sarcastic, defiant child. However, when one half of that dynamic is gone, the show as a whole suffers. Joel’s death also had absolutely no emotional impact on me because I genuinely didn’t believe he was dead, since killing his character would be stupid. Turns out, it was just stupid. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/06/25 Full Review Adam P. I have no idea why there are low reviews for this. The show is excellent. Tremendous writing, acting, storyline, set design, along with a point about humanity. It is bold and not afraid to take risks. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/05/25 Full Review Mak D Good but misses out on great. Production values, game easter eggs, supporting cast all top notch but the decision to make the main character altogether an insufferable ass in both intelligence and personality was jarring. About to go on an 800-mile solo revenge trip? Doesn't think to pack beyond weapons. Years into an apocalypse and has fighting and shooting skills? Can't utilize a map without assistance. Thinks picking a fight with 6 armed men with M16s while you have a pistol and a friend is a good idea? Actions like these along with her caustic personality in many situations (vs the resourceful, smart, strategic, witty) game version was a miss IMO. Casting/writing for her was simply nerfed in an otherwise well-done adaptation. To be fair, I thought the game (story, especially) was stellar and I've been playing since "your princess is in another castle" was new. All *that* hate seems derived from men afraid of physically strong women as even after reading the vitriol online I didn't see a problem. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/06/25 Full Review Read all reviews
