Ben Pobjie The Age (Australia) ...it’s not a cheerful show. Nor is it a groundbreaking one: dark tales of death and ghosts of the past are not exactly uncommon in the annals of British TV. But it is gorgeously made and meticulously plotted production, with top-notch performances... Rated: 3.5/5 May 22, 2025 Full Review Lucy Mangan Guardian A great psychological drama attached to a cracking crime thriller. Or a cracking crime thriller attached to a great psychological drama; I am not sure. Either way, it’s a supremely satisfying treat. Rated: 4/5 Mar 19, 2025 Full Review Joel Keller Decider While the mystery of the series The One That Got Away is intriguing, the personal dynamics between the show’s main characters are what we are more interested in. Philip S This is about the worst British TV police drama we've ever watched. Very poor unbelievable script, with many inaccuracies and inconsistencies. Ffion seemed too young to be a DI when her ex Rick was still only a DS. Highly implausible that in a largish South Wales town both of them and their families had personal connections to the various suspects and victims. Also, given these personal connections, unlikely that investigating officers would be allowed to continue on the case. One of the early suspects was remanded in custody in a prison locally and, while there, was approached by the long serving convict Paul. Unlikely that remand prisoners would be mixed in with old lags. Then in a later episode Rick and Ffion travel several hours to visit Paul in prison in Worcestershire. That does not gel with Paul's prior talking face to face to the remand bloke. Rick confesses to the DCI boss that in the old case he had persuaded a witness to give false evidence. He would not have just been stood down; he'd have been charged with perverting the course of justice. Pathetic really. God knows why we persisted with it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/29/25 Full Review Lorraine M I wanted to like this show but it’s just poorly written and acted and I like the lead actors in other shows. The dwelling on personal issues ruined the show for me. Like your daughter almost gets shot but you can still cheat on your wife? Just awful. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/12/25 Full Review Gerard E The story line jumped everywhere with many inconsistencies The plot was not remotely believable and the mechanics of it all was poorly arranged Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/09/25 Full Review Theo S. Héro + Really bad acting. The storyline isn't horrible, however poorly executed. (at episode 3) Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/24/25 Full Review Dan B I binge watched this after finding it on bbc iplayer. The story was interesting and was a fresh take on the serial killer crime genre. My only criticism was that police procedures were overlooked. The last episode was particularly ridiculous. Ffion left a major investigation , where they were racing against the clock, searching for a person whose life was in threat, without telling anyone where she was going. I also guessed that the carer was involved very early on. It also didn't make sense that they were given bail, given that they were a danger. Silly but could set up another series. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/16/25 Full Review Nick W This is without doubt one of the very poorest shows I have ever seen; the writing is SO bad that it's actually embarassing in many places, and the acting is just dreadful. Episode 1 isn't great but after that it gets steadily worse and worse - there are just so many scenes which are, frankly, ludicrous. This, honestly, doesn't even deserve one star. Don't waste your time! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/15/25 Full Review Read all reviews
