What to Know

Critics Consensus

Elisabeth Moss' dramatic power remains undiminished with another arresting performance, but The Veil's clunky storytelling doesn't live up to its star's chops.

Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) The Veil is rote in terms of a spy thriller, we’ve seen most of these beats before, but what keeps it distinct is the onscreen chemistry between Elisabeth Moss and Yumna Marwan May 15, 2024 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) It’s somewhat clunky, but more worryingly quite self-impressed. May 9, 2024 Full Review J. Kelly Nestruck Globe and Mail The Veil has a star and enough of a hook to grab you -- and, at six episodes, seems algorithmically calculated to be short enough that you probably won’t give up if you start... You’d almost feel guilty turning it off. May 6, 2024 Full Review Christopher Stevens Daily Mail (UK) The shifting layers of psychological mystery and the pervading sense of Western values under attack make this perfect fare for anyone who loved the first few seasons of Homeland. Rated: 5/5 Aug 4, 2025 Full Review James Walton The Spectator The dialogue is often corny, the kickass heroine levels feel almost parodic and nothing is remotely plausible. Nonetheless -- and this is the properly annoying bit -- there’s still enough intrigue and mad fun to keep us watching. Jul 24, 2025 Full Review Susan Granger SSG Syndicate Suspenseful terrorist miniseries that serves primarily as an acting showcase for adversarial actresses Elisabeth Moss and Yumma Marwan. Rosie O Great series. Humour and big characters. Can’t wait for more! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/26/25 Full Review L. F Elisabeth Moss gave a great performance but it wasn't enough to save the show. It actually seemed really promising to begin with, but turned into what can only be describled as muddled, unbelievable, poorly executed, espionage nonsense. The storyline was overly convoluted for no reason, which then required countless convenient coincidences & left-field "ah-ha" moments in order to keep things moving. It asked for way too much suspension of disbelief from the audience. The slapstick violence & unnecessary creepy "sexy" scenes slowing things down during what were apparently time critical moments, were the final nails in the coffin. What a mess! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/25/25 Full Review Neil C Lazy, disjointed storytelling that's riddled with cliches. Elizabeth Moss talks to herself all the time, like a fan-fiction heroine whose author doesn't have the skill to explain her motivations any other way. The secret service agents make James Bond look realistic and action scenes have a jarring lack of research - apparently French roadside bollards so easily detach that you can use them as a weapon to assault motorcycle riders and coastguard helicopters lead SEAL team raids. There's a weird daddy-issues theme running through it, which either needs to be made central to the plot or dropped entirely. As it is, it feels like the writer thinks daddy-issues plus kicking ass now and again automatically make Elizabeth Moss' character interesting and deep. They do not. The Veil is what you'd get if you asked chatGPT for a movie script about a female spy. The first few episodes aren't terrible but it gets worse and the conclusion is truly awful. Don't bother. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/17/25 Full Review KATHRYN G That was BAD. Female Bond trope is dated and it really shows that Moss was executive producer - far to much time spent on her face supposedly displaying her ‘shape-shifting’ (aka acting) but sadly only served to draw attention to how much better Marwan her co-lead was. It felt far too much like Homeland, and Marwan’s features being so similar to Danes made that harder to ignore. So many tired cliches - controlling older lover paws at heroine’s face as she forces a smile, motorcycle riding assassins dispatched in king-fu style, everyone swigging whiskey continuously, chucking phones and SIM cards into water ever five seconds but still having their contacts on speed dial, Russian villain making a call and succinctly describing his deadly plans for radioactive attack on USA to someone who already knows the plan, a spy whose biggest thrill is choosing a new name for herself at the start of each mission, the ‘control room’ with photographs of all the key players, their passports and top secret files pinned to the walls, someone lying fatally wounded but managing to shoot another guy in the head 50 feet away, the love interest telling our heroine “it’s over” as she sits in her ballgown on the floor Were they gaping holes in the plot, or was it left half-arsed so that a second series can be made? Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/09/25 Full Review Fan F I've never posted before but feel compelled to after watching the superb The Veil, the acting, cinematography, and plot lines are excellent. It's well worth watching and imo deserves a rating in the 90s. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/30/25 Full Review david d Can't make out who is lying and who to believe. The American agent is stereotype bully and very annoying I wish Elizabeth Moss would stop smilng. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/29/25 Full Review Read all reviews
