4d agoIt's been a long time since I've enjoyed a story about a rag tag team of unlikely adventurers, brought together by a shared mission. This series takes it's time to weave a tale which allows you to become connected with the characters, to allow you to truly fear and root for their fates. Watching this was like viewing the colourful portrayal any of our ancestors would have had dancing in their minds eye as they sat around the fire listening to the tales of adventure, discovery, tragedy, vengeance, love, fear, bravery.... Had the Norse themselves had access to the story telling technology 1000 years ago to craft the Sagas, I think this is exactly how they would have crafted it. It is a tale which excites the intellect, tears at the heart, ignites anger and anguish, and above all quenches the thirst for adventure many other series fail to sate.

Jan 31, 2023The writing is awful. Freydis is almost unwatchable for me. She literally is the biggest Mary Sue I have seen in a while. Why is she the chosen one? How is everyone just so keenly aware of the very quick scene in Upsalla when all witnesses shortly thereafter died? Why is everyone so aware of her battling capabilities when she just had an in city training montage and then fled the battle? This is just one example, but I think she shows it the best. All the characters suffer from this, but her most of all. The writers clearly think we're stupid. I am expecting this to get cancelled before season 3 sadly. The original Vikings was great and enjoyable and I felt like the characters all had clear and realistic motivations. The original wasn't without its faults, of course, but this show… I could go on forever. And I will. Why is the queen, someone who got to live and remain in power due to her fearless level-headedness, now stupid enough to murder one of her ladies in waiting and make an enemy of a clearly powerful man? That was so out of the character established for her already. Why is Leif so obsessed with Christianity after ONE insignificant encounter with it, and when it go obviously tortures him to think he won't reunite with his rushed love who died last season in Valhalla? Why does he suddenly become obsessed with learning from the Muslim woman when he's never displayed any interest in mathematics and philosophy? These are things the writers are just flinging at us without showing instances of character development or clear motivations. Why did that one King in the "New Upsalla" murder everyone in a religious ceremony the second he came home with no explanation, and why did no one in the village react? They're vikings that worship the old gods! They literally believe in honor over fear of death. The old show understood this and people weren't afraid to challenge authority. Overall this story is just frustrating and I wish Netflix would get new writers and new actors. It seems, as usual, Netflix was more concerned with aesthetics than story telling, and as usual, the show will suffer for that. This is just such an insulting piece of media. Two stars for the obvious money they dumped into this - it does look nice - but my frustration with the characters poorly written actions took me out of it every five minutes.

Jan 30, 2023Generally it was a good season and I watched thru it fairly quickly. However I was a bit disappointed in the fact there no "big battle" scenes. Sure there was some action in Jomsberg but even when Olaf arrived they opted to have his entire crew blown up, instead of having an epic, large scale fight scene. That was really my major negative point, but otherwise I enjoyed the parts about Harold and Leif, as well as the Jomsberg storyline. The Queen's storyline was decent but I want to see more of Canute. I'm sure they are building up to something in season 3 so for now I will have to be patient. Overall, great show and season just a few things I would have liked to see a little differently as a fan of Valhalla and the overarching "Vikings" series as a whole.

Jan 30, 2023I kept waiting for something to justify watching this and then I realized that was the only reason I was watching it. My memory of the original series kept me in the game until the pathetic conclusion. The story lines were thin, the script horrendous, the acting mediocre, and the directing was terrible. The scenes cut in and out so quickly that any dramatic tension just couldn't be sustained. At some points I simply couldn't figure out what was going on or where I was. I hope this is the end of the Vikings Project for Netflix. Valhalla deserves greater heroes than this series is spitting out. The gods are not happy, I am sure.

Jan 28, 2023Netflix embraced itself with casting choices - I don't want see Russian actresses while thousands of Ukrainians are dying

Jan 28, 2023It's refreshing to see great cinematography, intelligent plot, and graphic hand to hand combat, especially in the watered down social climate we are now living, where everything life-like offends the small in numbers, but loud, easily offended critics. Please continue this series, it's just what many of us want, and need. Love it!
