After working behind the scenes on films and television series during the 1980s, Bronwen Hughes moved into the director's chair during the early 1990s. She helmed several episodes of the sketch comedy show "The Kids in the Hall" during its fifth season, as well as a music video for pop singer Amy Grant, for her song "Lucky One." In '96, Hughes made the leap to feature directing with "Harriet the Spy," based on the classic children's novel by Louise Fitzhugh. It proved popular, earning more than double its $13 million budget, and from that moderate success she landed her next project, the '99 romantic-comedy "Forces of Nature" starring Sandra Bullock and Ben Affleck. The film tells the story of two people, a neurotic and a free spirit, who fate tosses together, albeit just days before one of them is supposed to get married. Hughes's budget this time around was much higher, but "Forces of Nature" was nevertheless a box office hit. Her only theatrical release during the 2000s was "Stander," a critically-acclaimed biopic and crime drama about a cop-turned-bank robber in South Africa. During the rest of the decade and into the 2010s, she helmed made-for-TV movies and episodes of various series, most notably the pilots of the cable dramas "White Collar" and "Fairly Legal." Beginning in '09, Hughes re-teamed with Thomas Jane, her star in "Stander," for episodes of his cable series "Hung."
