Steve D Gaynor is always worth the watch but something is missing here without sound. Perhaps because you know it was meant to have dialog. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/24 Full Review Audience Member Simple but touching story, beautifully told. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member A romantic tale with so much more to tell. The atmosphere is one that keeps pulling you into the story - certainly not a surprise with Frank Borzage behind the camera. I highly recommend this beautiful film for silent picture's lovers and beyond, you definitely won't regret it ! A must see to enjoy over and over again. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member now it makes me wonder , how come Janet Gaynor & Charles Farrel weren't fall for each other? or.. maybe they were ?! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Some classy silent filmmaking here, with the demure Gaynor and her four time and handsome leading man, Charles Farrell. Rather like Chaplin's City Lights mixed with Lon Chaney's The Penalty, though not as dark. This love story of a crippled man's affections for his close friend becomes muddled as she may be lost to him for another man. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member frank borzage was a leading director of the silent era who fell on hard times and was nearly forgotten. and that's hard to believe with films like this in his oeuvre. the third and last pairing of one of the all-time great screen couples, charles farrell and janet gaynor, the film is unabashedly romantic and guileless, with fairytale sets and an otherworldly atmosphere. gaynor retired from films in the 30s and farrell's career fell off sharply when his cartoon voice belied his rugged looks. watching the crippled farrell trying to teach himself to walk again is heart wrenching, as is janet's abduction by his loutish war buddy. it's wonderful stuff about which one can truly say: they don't make them like that anymore Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
