Brad P Harsh, unflinching, and evocative "The Boys Next Door" is a cautionary tale of where unchecked mental issues and aggression can lead. Caulfield and Sheen lead a commendable cast and Spheeris' direction dives deep into every ugly facet of the leads' personalities. Not at all what I was expecting. Spheeris follows up Suburbia with another tale of alienated youth, that take a tour down a much darker path, as these two boys go an escalating crime spree. It's a commentary on the hatred that is just bubbling under the surface of repression. It's dark, nihilistic and I loved it. I love the atmosphere and vibe of this film- reminds me of another rather underrated film by the name of Miracle Mile. This is dark movie full of violence and the fact that the leads are such assholes doesn't help. It takes courage to even make a film such as this. This is not as much a film to admire, but more a film that depicts a social message wrapped up in a cultish presentation. Growing up in the 80s, a guy could almost relate to Sheen's character albeit we hope that friend we know isn't really as psycho as portrayed here.... or are they? All in all, worth the watch - plus ironically due to the low knowledge of this film, most people won't realize it was remade in 2013. That film is called "Girls against Boys". Same thing.
