Critics Consensus

Though it offers a few modest pleasures for undemanding viewers, Twins leans too heavily on the wackiness of its premise to overcome its narrative shortcomings.

Dave Kehr Chicago Tribune For all of its geniality and gushing good will, Ivan Reitman`s ''Twins'' remains an advertising campaign in search of a movie. Rated: 2/4 Mar 12, 2019 Full Review Peter Travers People Magazine What a concept: Cast pumped-up Arnold Schwarzenegger and pint-size Danny De Vito as twins separated at birth. Funny, huh? Sure is, hilarious even, for about five minutes. But the 102 minutes remaining are a stretch for one joke. Mar 12, 2019 Full Review Richard Schickel TIME Magazine The whole movie has a warmth about it that never slops over into sentiment: there is much more here than tall-guy, short-guy jokes. Mar 12, 2019 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...a seemingly foolproof premise that’s employed to mildly watchable yet predominantly disappointing effect... Rated: 2/4 Aug 13, 2022 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) A very funny comedy that also has heart. [Full review in Spanish] Jun 16, 2022 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Like many comedies attempting to exist in the real world, the numerous predicaments are far too severe to be approached with even a touch of sincerity. David M. Very funny! Worth the watch! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/04/25 Full Review Joel H Twins was a family favorite when I was younger. I remember laughing at this movie and quoting it with my siblings. However, this comedy is not as funny as I remember it being. The humor mostly comes from Julius (Arnold Schwarzenegger) being a fish out of water and Vincent (Danny DeVito) calling him on it, and those jokes are sparse compared to the family drama and action movie subplots. There’s an oddly serious tone to this ridiculous story. I’m not saying it isn’t enjoyable, and it brought back some fun memories for me, but I was kind of sad to realize that Twins didn’t age as well as I hoped. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/16/25 Full Review Stephen C Unfunny in 1 hour and 52 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The USA grossed over $107,400,000.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/20/25 Full Review Nolan L A good funny comedy with great chemistry in between the two main actors Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/09/25 Full Review SkyRo P "Twins" is a comedy film released in 1988 featuring the unlikely duo of Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger, who portray twin brothers with strikingly different backgrounds. One hails from a tropical island, while the other is a city dweller, yet they share the same mother. The film embraces its own silliness and corniness, delivering exactly what you would anticipate from a pairing of a towering muscle-bound man and a pint-sized character. The plot revolves around a rather peculiar premise involving in vitro fertilization, where a mix-up in sperm donations leads to the birth of two vastly different siblings, representing a bizarre genetic experiment for its time. Despite its absurdity, "Twins" has managed to resonate with audiences, maintaining a sense of charm that's kept it relevant over the years. Many find it a delightful film to revisit, even if it’s not one you’d watch repeatedly. Personally, I’ve caught it once, and while it was a memorable experience, I don’t feel compelled to watch it again.
