Lisa Schwarzbaum Entertainment Weekly Rated: C Sep 7, 2011 Full Review Desson Thomson Washington Post Tries to incorporate almost film-noir elements into a heartland love story. The blending feels inorganic; and composer Bruce Broughton doesn't help matters by coating every moment with a repetitive, syrupy theme. jon c We all experience first loves and last chances. Director Bruno Baretto adapts the book The Farmer starring Dennis Hopper, Amy Irving, Gary Busey, and Amy Locane. Taking place in the 1970s Midwest it stars farmer Joseph Svenden and his girlfriend Rosalee. Her husband is dead and she has a son that isn't warming up to Joseph being with her. Joseph suffered an accident while riding a tractor so he carries a cane. He teaches at the local high school. Suddenly he gains attention of a young female student of his named Catherine. From there they engage in a forbidden affair which has Joseph reassess everything in his life. Catherine is also kinda messed up being that her mother is an alcoholic and her father spends his time hunting. This is her first time being in love being it's an older man with her teacher but Joseph may see that this may be his last chance to get married to Rosalee. He doesn't want them both to wait too long to start something together. Many of us like him get carried away doing certain things. But when it comes to being in love we all want to be 'carried away' towards some form of happiness and stability. Hopper is exceptional and Locane too. Irving does her best being a woman that's been too afraid to move forward without disappointment. With Joseph is he able to get his life together without resorting to play antics with a teenager? Maybe it just takes one tiny error in judgement to know where he truly wants to be. Great music, touching performances, and a believable scenario with great emotional tangles that will have us open our eyes. Even adult characters can be just as confused and conflicted. It's refreshing to have a fresh perspective on the choices we make in our middle-aged lives. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review victor o If it were not for the cast and the wonderful direction, I would call this movie soft-core porn. Joseph, a middle-aged teacher/farmer gets the midlife crisis of any man's dreams when he has an affair with a seventeen-year-old student. This all happens while he is having trouble with the way his life has been since his teenage years when an accident crippled him. Since then he has been feeling like an old man for the past several decades of his life. He hates living and working on the farm while taking care of his sick mother and hates having to fight for a teaching post he is no longer qualified to work. He is engaged to Rosalee, the widow of a dead friend but there is no real passion. Catherine seems to be perfect as the daughter of a retired military officer whose wife is an alcoholic. Years of city life have made her attractive and wise beyond her years so it is understandable that Joseph would have a fling with the willing young woman to ignite the passion that has been absent from his life. But of course, this cannot go unnoticed, especially in a small town. Things come to a head when Rosalee and the girl's father find out, but the consequences are resolved a bit quickly and while it ends satisfactorily it made me want more. As mentioned, this movie could have easily been pornographic if not for the great acting from Dennis Hopper and Amy Irving. The fact that Amy Locane is amazingly gorgeous showing several full-frontal scenes, but it is not just her and Hopper but also Hopper and Irving. It felt pornographic. I also felt that the movie glossed over the fact that Catherine was still a girl, but it is not regarded as pedophilia because she was seventeen. Perhaps if she was younger maybe. Because what matters here is the old man with a midlife crisis ruining his life. Perhaps if the movie ended with him being forced to marry her as a punishment for his dalliance may have been fitting. Still, this was a good movie to watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Small town teacher gets involved with 17 year old student Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Its a poetic movie, those who love poems and art, watch this movie. It'll blow your brains out... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member A sensitive piece anchored by Hopper, fulfilled by the supporting cast, but let down by somewhat sterile direction. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Pretty tame and pointless. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Read all reviews
