      Critics Consensus

Heist didn't cover any new ground, but the cast and Mamet's expertise with witty banter make it worthwhile.

Alec B A fitting title for a movie that reduces this genre to its most basic elements (misdirection, pulpy dialogue, and ostensibly simple characters). Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/10/24 Full Review Steve D A lot of talent to produce the same thing we have seen a million times. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Good old-fashioned caper movie. More twists and turns than a box of corkscrews. From the pen of David Mamet. Don't make them like this anymore, and that's a shame. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review marc f I thought the first 10 minutes looked really promising.. Then the amazing cast started chewing scenery like they were all drunk on the last night of a community theatre production.. The dialogue started to feel really forced. When I heard the line: "He's so cool, when he goes to sleep, the sheep count him..." I knew it was time to go. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Taylor L Heist is everything that you love and hate about robbery flicks. It operates on the standard formula of fun, slightly distinctive characters plus twists on twists; you know the deception is coming for both the audience and those on the screen, it's up to you to predict how it's going to shake out. Heist structures itself relatively well, setting up a few easy wins for the audience to make them think they have a handle on the con before throwing some curveballs your way. Most of the actors do a pretty decent job, even if Rebecca Pidgeon feels shockingly out of place and largely irrelevant to the plot. Where it seems to stumble is tone - there is never a sense of real fun or superficial entertainment value, nor is there a real grit or toughness; it's more a paint-by-numbers that functions as intended but doesn't go beyond. The details may have a couple of surprises, but the story beats and character arcs don't. Still, a decent enough representative of the genre as a whole. Jason Bailey Flavorwire We watch a movie like 'Heist' for the virtuosity of the execution, for the wit with which Mamet writes his way through the conventions, and the pleasure his actors take in chewing on his dialogue, in all of its repetition, shop talk, and artful profanity. Nov 12, 2016 Full Review Nell Minow Common Sense Media Captivating David Mamet movie for grownups. Rated: 2.5/4 Sep 23, 2022 Full Review Mitchell Beaupre Paste Magazine A cold-blooded neo-noir thriller as only Mamet could make them. Rated: 8/10 Sep 22, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review When so few heist movies occupy but cannot overcome the subgenre’s blueprint, Mamet’s Heist remains as singular as its title.
