A fitting title for a movie that reduces this genre to its most basic elements (misdirection, pulpy dialogue, and ostensibly simple characters).

Starts off alright, but honestly gets incredibly boring after a while, which for a suspense film is the kiss of death. Most of the characters are unremarkable and superfluous, and the story is clumsy to the point of confusion a lot of the time. As far as heist films go, this one isn't that great.

Heist is a weaker David Mamet film but even with that statement it's still a very solid thriller. David Mamet is a filmmaker who specializes in twists and turns and as an audience member you expect these as part of the filmmakers style. Heist is boosted by the actors and Hackman shines in the lead role. The film is full of quality support actors who breathe life into the Mamet dialogue and characters. The weaker aspects of the film is the reliance of too many twists and it hampers a very strong film. I just felt the film was weakened by the amount of twists in the finale. Hackman was in the final stages of his career before retirement and I felt the bitterness he had for his profession was beneficial for an older thief who was eager to get out of his craft. The film is strong but as a Mamet film it isn't as strong as other films. 20/07/2020

Good caper. I was surprised to see a much older Gene Hackman become such a powerful force. David Mamet's dialogue is in full gear as it was in his previous pictures and now he is ready to be a magician in "Heist". I like the way how the actually heist goes down and maybe thieves in real life can actually pull off such an almost impossible feet. The cast is really good and I got to somewhat feel a connection as if the characters have been together for quite some time. There is a few minor flaws and the tone of the picture does feel like watching a TV drama but "Heist" isn't boring, it's actually intelligent. I like that.
