Devastated after the death of his wife, Jai (Artee Patel), immigrant Indian businessman Madhav (Erick Avari) throws himself into his work. As the date of Jai's birthday approaches, Madhav is visited by his estranged son, Sam (Kal Penn), and Sam's girlfriend, Nicole (Sheetal Sheth), in town for an engagement party. Madhav tags along and runs into April (Mimi Rogers), an old friend. The two become romantically involved, despite the objections of April's racist mother, Evelyn (Louise Fletcher).
