      An American Pickle

      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

An American Pickle lacks the tart snap viewers might expect given its creative premise, but Seth Rogen's dual performance makes this a low-key comedy to relish.

Ay D Amusing premise, ending was rushed but pleasant resolution. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/24 Full Review Ira It was so amazing, honestly number 1 movie ever. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/21/24 Full Review Dhillon P Very common Seth Rogen failure. He needs to stick to making ash trays his acting career is a trainwreck. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/02/24 Full Review Joao G What? Was? That? I mean... Serious? Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/07/24 Full Review matthias s "An American Pickle" is a mixed bag of a movie, with moments of humor and heart that are weighed down by a sluggish pace and a predictable plot. The concept of a 1920s immigrant preserved in pickle juice for 100 years and waking up in modern-day Brooklyn is a creative one, but the execution falls short. The film is carried by the lead performance of Seth Rogen, who shines in both his roles as the old-fashioned Herschel and his hipster grandson Ben. However, the jokes are hit or miss, and the story ultimately fails to fully capitalize on its interesting premise. "American Pickle" is an average film that will provide a few laughs, but won't leave a lasting impression. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/09/23 Full Review Dan F This movie reminded me of "Multiplicity" because of how one actor plays multiple roles. In "Multiplicity", Michael Keaton plays three characters. Both films pull off this trick very convincingly. Both films are also comedies. I'm sure there must be at least a few other films that use the multiple-character trick, going back to the earliest days of film-making. I enjoyed "An American Pickle," but it was not as funny as "Multiplicity" or as funny as some of Rogen's other work. Still, it was pleasant and interesting throughout. There seemed to be a few plot holes where you have to suspend your disbelief. I feel like maybe the plot could have been improved, perhaps with a little less focus on the Rogen characters, and a few other interesting characters or a love interest thrown into the mix. I think some of the more critical reviews arise because people are expecting one kind of movie -- zany slapstick maybe -- but they are getting something that is not so zany, and something that is a lot more thoughtful than some of Rogen's other work. It may even be that some of the negativity has to do with anti-Jewish sentiment, though I don't know why anyone who harbors anti-Jewish sentiment would watch a Seth Rogen movie -- especially this Seth Rogen movie. Robbie Collin Daily Telegraph (UK) The various visual and staging techniques that allow Rogen to act opposite himself are invisible, and the film delivers consistent amusement. Rated: 3/5 Nov 22, 2020 Full Review Clarisse Loughrey Independent (UK) Its premise may sound quaint, but the whimsy of An American Pickle helps nurture all kinds of delicate emotions. Rated: 4/5 Nov 12, 2020 Full Review Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald An American Pickle is far from a disaster, but it is more amusing than hilarious. It is that thing a comedy can never be -- only half good. Rated: 3/5 Sep 16, 2020 Full Review Ethan Gordon InSession Film Simon Rich is a great short story writer, but it doesn't seem as if his strong suit comes with screenplays. Rated: C+ Mar 21, 2024 Full Review Manuel São Bento MSB Reviews An American Pickle surprisingly takes a grounded approach on the “man out of his time” concept, making its message about “family”, even though its premise is absolutely bonkers. Seth Rogen offers a fantastic double performance. Rated: B- Jul 24, 2023 Full Review Akos Peterbencze Vulnerable Man (Medium) An American Pickle is not funny. It’s simple, silly, and often sore like a muscle strain. Jul 20, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews
