Critics Consensus

Exuberant and eye-popping, Avengers: Age of Ultron serves as an overstuffed but mostly satisfying sequel, reuniting its predecessor's unwieldy cast with a few new additions and a worthy foe.

Dwight Brown National Newspaper Publishers Association There is little in this film that is new, but that doesn't matter. The characters are still entertaining, the action scenes thrilling and near orgasmic, and the human relationships touching. Mar 7, 2017 Full Review Jason Bailey DVDTalk.com Several thrilling action sequences, a great many good jokes, and an unshakable sense that everybody is just going through the paces. May 28, 2016 Full Review Leonard Maltin leonardmaltin.com Joss Whedon set a higher bar with the first "Avengers" (2012) and tried, in many ways, to top it here. He got close... May 5, 2015 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies I ate up the funny banter between each unique superhero personality. I loved the large-scaled action which seemed ripped straight from the pages of a comic book. I was interested in the future movie tablesetting. Rated: 4/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Raising the stakes and swinging for the fences like a good film sequel should, Joss Whedon pays off the Phase 2 initiative with both a new level of groundbreaking effort and a continued dedication to the master blueprint of a grander big picture. Mei The film delivers exciting action sequences, including the Hulk vs. Iron Man fight (Hulkbuster Some jokes didnt land well, making Ultron seem less meaningfull. Overall, its a solid Marvel movie but often considered weaker than the first Avengers film and Infinity War. If you enjoy superhero action and character moments, youll probably like it, but its not the best in the series. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/25 Full Review Joshua V Happy 10 years the averages age of ultron review one of my favorite movie i love it in 4k ultra hd beautiful visuals I love all the action fight I am happy that this movie 1 billion dollars at the box office 5 star 10 out 10 star 100 out 100 star Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/05/25 Full Review Audience Member It’s been a whole 10 years This still my #1 movie of 2015! Joss Whedon returns for the second time expanding more on the Marvel Cinematic Universe Returning are Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye The two new additions here are the introduction of Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor Johnson as twins Wanda and Pietro Maximoff aka Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver After the battle of New York the Avengers have been keeping Earth safe even without the assistance of SHIELD But Tony Stark has a vision of something terrible coming so in response he starts to put together the Ultron program, a peacekeeping initiative to bring peace and balance to the world Unfortunately this artificial intelligence becomes self aware and decides to enact his own way of saving the world given humanity’s history of destruction He believes he has what the Avengers will never have harmony, therefore, they start to break apart from the inside, the only way to save the world in his eyes to destroy them as well as breaking all barriers being total Darwinism Scarlett Witch using her telekinesis and Quicksilver with his speed then assist Ultron considering their home of Sokovia was affected by Tony’s own technology That makes him worried this might be the end of the path he started Captain America is also Ultron’s antithesis which all he can see is war We want to protect the world but we don’t want it to change, how can humanity be saved if it’s not mean to evolve, maybe we often confuse peace with quiet, the reason why we fight is so we can end it and go home, everyone creates the thing they dread, men of peace create engines of war, maybe we’re all puppets tangled in strings, we’re always scratching the surface never looking within, nothing lasts forever, modern technology advances but it has to be respected like any organism, why do we create in the first place? The first movie was a fanboy’s dream come true seeing multiple heroes come together and try to get along Here it’s all about trying to keep them together ; some say it feels like an honor others it’s a challenge after all they still get scared/vulnerable with their changing needs and beliefs Are they what’s wrong with the world? Lots of grandiose themes of creater/created, who’s the real villain, the fear of AI, and how to actually achieve peace I’m actually glad this was way more entertaining balancing the character moments as well as the action and special effects along with the humor It’s also darker than its predecessor in many ways Love James Spader as Ultron being quite intimidating and prophetic next to Scarlett Witch almost tearing the Avengers apart Not only is Ultron knowledgeable about what makes them each tick showing the cracks but he also holds all the best/worst qualities of Tony Stark Black Widow and Hawkeye even get more of a backstory to keep things grounded having them evolve also having internal conflicts It also introduces the character of Vision for future events to unfold And this movie paved the way for the next couple of films as well as other stories to be established Lots of inside references sprinkled throughout The score is really good too by Danny Elfman Some might call this a step down from its predecessor and there’s only certain things for fans making it feel overstuffed but personally I enjoyed it so much more since it expanded more on this universe leading to greater pastures Sadly this was Whedon’s last run for the MCU but he delivered so much being a fan of the comics mythology This is another example of a fun summer popcorn movie!!! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/01/25 Full Review tim s Ultron proves to be a formidable foe, though his master plan feels overly convoluted. One might expect an enemy AI to devise a more straightforward strategy for eliminating its adversaries. Nitpicking aside, this is a highly commendable sequel. The action is abundant, and the introduction of new characters significantly boosts the wow factor. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/01/25 Full Review Jesse T Out of all of the films in the MCU, this happens to be my favorite of them all. It’s not perfect but it’s perfect to me. This movie’s villain and the movie itself is so underrated and is hated only because it’s cool to hate it. The film also has so much symbolism in it that no one even talks about. It’s still wild to me. It is a beautiful work of art and I’d say it’s even better than the first one. Not to mention there are SIX fight scenes in the movie. That’s more than any of the other avengers films. They definitely did a lot with this one and it deserves so much more praise than what it has. Anyway. It’s a must a see. Thank you for making this gem. Love it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/24/25 Full Review Michael Karvelis I was so disappointed in this. Ultron was not intimidating. The introduction of the twins was boring. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/24/25 Full Review Read all reviews
