Mark J They really manage to take a pivotal point in history and reduce it to boring series of events lacking passion or action. The flies buzzing about in various scenes are more interesting than the dialogue. Even the nose can't save this. The portrayal of First Nations Peoples was decent and the bilingual nature of the characters was cool to contemplate. The Francois fighting scenes came straight out the Kirk Douglas playbook ala the Buccaneer. Was excited by the premise disappointed in the execution. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/27/23 Full Review Kendall S The acting was wonderfully over-the-top and mostly enjoyable. But the plot was not only thin and the politics simplistic, the denouement was unnecessarily cruel on the audience. [Spoiler alert] Did they really think the British government would punish a child that was defending herself from an attacker? It's preposterous. And why did we get no warning that Xavier was a pedophile? Talk about a stupid twist. Didn't that mean that the mother was partly to blame for bringing him into the home? It was just all so stupid. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/27/23 Full Review Audience Member This film is not "Gettysburg": Not at all! It's not a classical War Story: Is a true Love Story ! Not an erotic or passional Love Story between a Man and a Woman (certainly it is ...) but a compelling and moving Maternal Love Story: A Mother and a Daughter tight together by a "fatal" Destiny... NO SPOILERS! That said, if you want to learn an important piece of Canadian History in accurate details this is not your cup of tea. But I recommend it to you if you like to be "touched" by deep feelings and emotions, very well directed and filmed in breath-taking scenery by Director Baudin, and performed by an Empathetic Cast, bad Guys included: Great Noèmie Godin Vigneau, and the young Juliette Gosselin above all: But everybody are more than good impersonating their characters! (P.s.- I don't want to mention Mr. Depardieu: since 30 years he's just always playing himself and his nose...) Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member MASTERFUL and BEAUTIFUL. Like a dance with all the right moves. SEE IT. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member So many seemed profoundly to dislike this movie. I liked it. It's like the old multi-night mini-series - like "Roots," say - but still good, even poignant by the end. Usually I'm in line with the other Reviews 75% of the time; but this is one of the 25% I'm not.. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Great historical fiction. I want to see it again. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

John Terauds Toronto Star History is long, life is short. It's certainly too short for the sort of overblown, melodramatic, pseudo-epic filmmaking Quebec's Jean Beaudin tried to foist on Francophone audiences two years ago. Rated: 1/4 Oct 21, 2005 Full Review David Gilmour Globe and Mail Feels like a French Romantic novel shot without a trace of irony.
