Michael Wilmington Los Angeles Times Broderick acts with a beautifully wary exuberance, full of a puckish vulnerability and anxious, twisted impishness. Rated: 3.5/5 Oct 26, 2011 Full Review Empire Magazine The combination of Neil Simon and Mike Nichols has the pair of them back to somewhere near their best. Rated: 4/5 Oct 26, 2011 Full Review Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader Perhaps this movie isn't as wise or as profound as Simon wants it to be, but it is certainly a cut above sitcom complacency, and packed with wit and charm. Oct 26, 2011 Full Review Stefan Pape Common Sense Media Biloxi Blues manages to explore so much yet by doing so little. In many respects, not a great deal happens, but you get such a flavor for young Jerome's journey into adulthood, as he navigates his way around is own enlisting into the United States Army. Jul 7, 2024 Full Review Philip French Observer (UK) This predictable affair, contrived and sentimental, features the usual [tropes]. May 4, 2022 Full Review Ángel Luis Inurria El Pais (Spain) It is pleasant, but not profound. It resembles a soft and fleeting caress that is not very significant. Leaburn O Really enjoyed it. Felt similar to the Styron book The Long March which I read recently. Good characters and good story. Watched on DVD. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/07/24 Full Review Joel H Coming right off the heels of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, I expected Matthew Broderick to, once again, play the part of a charming rogue in Biloxi Blues. In fact, I remember seeing the poster for this movie as a kid and thinking it would be like Ferris Bueller in the Army. It's not. It's a much more serious story and features a much more subdued performance by Broderick. I don't know. Perhaps it plays better on stage as a Neil Simon play, but as I was watching it on the screen, it felt like a standard-issue boot camp movie. This film is likeable enough, but overall I felt a little let down by Biloxi Blues. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/03/23 Full Review Audience Member it's pretty uneven, tonally. It's engaging enough to keep you watching all the way through, but it's all pretty cliche. Overall it feels like an extended sitcom... Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/12/22 Full Review Audience Member It was an enjoyable film. As someone else noted, Matthew Broderick didn’t leave Ferris Bueller in Chicago. He brought it to 1940s Mississippi. It works sometimes. Christopher Walken doesn’t disappoint as the crazy sergeant. What makes it work is chemistry between the actors. A true ensemble. Broderick is the star, but he doesn’t hog the screen time. It’s a good watch if have 90 minutes to kill. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/22/21 Full Review Audience Member Neil Simon was one non- funny writer. The directing by Nichols was excellent however. Well crafted film that just can't get above a bad script. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Good story of young recruits and mishaps preparing for battle in WW2. Some great performances and witty humour thrown in as well. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/01/21 Full Review Read all reviews
