Conan the Destroyer softens the edges that gave its predecessor gravitas, resulting in a campy sequel without the comparative thrills.

Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com [My] affinity for Conan the Destroyer isn’t entirely due to nostalgia. This Hyborian Age expedition may be on the goofy side of the equation, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a heck of a lot of fun. Rated: 3/4 Aug 28, 2024 Full Review Neil Jillett The Age (Australia) Richard Fleischer's directing is as limp as the film's relentless attempts at comedy. May 3, 2022 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times The first Conan movie, Conan the Barbarian, was a dark and gloomy fantasy about the shadows of prehistory. This second film is sillier, funnier, and more entertaining. Rated: 3/4 Oct 23, 2004 Full Review Brian Costello Common Sense Media Conan the Destroyer has all the hallmarks of a bad '80s fantasy movie -- cheesy special effects, unintentionally funny dialogue, and sets that look like they were left over from bad heavy metal music videos. Rated: 2/5 May 3, 2023 Full Review Alan Jones Starburst Insubstantial... lightweight, but mindlessly entertaining. Aug 2, 2022 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins The special effects haven't improved and the sincerity of the adventures have swung too far in the opposite direction, resulting in a sequel that is just as flawed. Jelisije J A nice little old school fantasy film where Conan goes on a journey to protect a princess in order to resurrect the love of his life. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/06/24 Full Review Patrick F One of my childhood favorites. It has a decent story, fantasy action. 80s classic. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/03/24 Full Review Jithin K They thought the first one was a bit too serious and made it campy and cheesy. The forced comedy, the unintended comedy, Conan speaking a lot where the one from the first movie wouldn't have needed to, even the production design reflects this cheesiness. All this led to a significant downgrade from the first movie but this is still a very entertaining fantasy movie on its own. Arnold is more of himself than in the previous movie but he still makes it work great in the action scenes. There are a lot of things that feel more problematic here but despite all such issues what they decided to keep from the first movie made this very entertaining. Overall, this feels less of a movie about Conan like the first one but maybe that's more how the books are. It's sad that we didn't get a Conan The Conqueror with Arnold but I don't think it would've been great if it followed the campiness of this movie either. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/10/24 Full Review Michael C Four decades after its release, "Conan the Destroyer" is a movie I still cannot help but enjoy to a certain extent despite the fact the movie is not all that good and is loaded with problems and flaws. As I watch it I often ask myself why I like it at all. The movie's main story is good, but it is undermined by a script that is not well written. The ensuing quest was very underwhelming in the end. There are also problems with the casting. Not all of it is bad. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Grace Jones and Mako are all very good in their respective roles. Even Tracy Walter does a decent job. However it is easy to see why "Conan the Destroyer" was the late Wilt Chamberlain's' first and last movie. He was horribly miscast as Bombaata, the Captain of Queen Taramis' guards. He made Sophia Coppola look like Meryl Streep. Olivia D'Abo is not terrible in her role as Princess Jenna, but she was not all that great either. To her credit I have seen in her in roles later in her career and she has consistently done a good job of acting. A major problem with her character is her attraction to Conan. She was fifteen at the time of filming. To the movie's credit, Jenna's attraction is not returned and he ultimately rebuffs her (Which I think was the right thing to do.). Despite the problems the movie does have positive highlights through out which I guess is why I still enjoy watching it today. Among such things is the, for the most part, well staged fight scenes, the climax with Dagoth is also well done. I have always enjoyed Conan's fight with the mirror monster. The best part of the film in my opinion. How can I forget Conan's drunken conversation with Jenna. That has stood the test of time. In the end, "Conan the Destroyer" is a movie I would enjoy, but would never recommend to anybody because they would think I am nuts. Still I try as I might, I just can't help but like it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/10/24 Full Review Howard H Special effects/costume choices are a little difficult to view at times. Dialogue and accent becomes a problem at times. Conan and two only, characters ensure is ok to watch. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/28/24 Full Review Read all reviews
