What to Know

Critics Consensus

Fathers and Daughters' name-brand cast can't cover for a screenplay that makes a half-hearted effort at delving into family dynamics but falls back on melodrama.

Katie Walsh Los Angeles Times Might as well have been titled "Daddy Issues: The Movie." Jul 8, 2016 Full Review Alissa Wilkinson RogerEbert.com If it didn't so obviously want to be a Serious Adult Drama, leaned into its own melodrama with zest, it could have been pretty good. Rated: 1.5/4 Jul 8, 2016 Full Review Stephen Holden New York Times As the movie jounces along on florid pronouncements that overstate the obvious, "Fathers and Daughters" defies credibility and insults the intelligence. Jul 7, 2016 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson The overall capacity of the able and honest heart of “Fathers and Daughters” is a winning quality that the cynics can choose to discount all they want. Rated: 4/5 Oct 13, 2024 Full Review Leigh Paatsch Herald Sun (Australia) While this section of the movie can be both moving and powerful, a second storytelling timeline tracking the difficult life facing Jake's daughter (played by Amanda Seyfried) a few decades later is not so successful. Rated: 2.5/5 Jul 27, 2018 Full Review Matthew Bond The Mail on Sunday (UK) Fathers And Daughters is a mawkish melodrama that, despite a starry cast, has little to recommend it. Michael A Excellent movie that had my attention from start to finish. The so called professionals here panning it is just incompetence. Frustrated armchair playwrights channeling the disappointment of their lack of skills by attacking those that have them. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/24/24 Full Review Terry H I'm one that can be completely satisfied with an emotional human story movie. A story of life. Doesn't have to be flashy, big moments, gigantic plot twists, etc. This is one of those movies that delivers. A story of living with tragedy and how it shapes your life and trying to live through it. I loved the the juxtaposition jumping between the younger years and the impact on the adult life. Beautiful movie. Loved it. As a father of a daughter about to head off to college I could totally immerse myself emotionally into all the characters. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/24 Full Review sheri n i loved it up to the middle and then it became to boring. It was sad the cast was amazing they just couldnt get the job done Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/11/24 Full Review Joshua D Negative reviewers have no soul. That's the only explanation. As a father to two little potato chips this was very moving. There is mature content so this isn't suitable for small children but it is well written with great acting. It captures the good, bad, and ugly of life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/24 Full Review Matt O I loved it. It was an emotional rollercoaster and, as a parent, it had me on the edge of my seat at times. Brilliant acting, particularly with the young Katie I thought. Great film Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/09/23 Full Review Sevenfold Z Ignore the bad reviews, they are just unpatient people and clearly this is not their movie type, its good having movies telling stories for an issue happening to a lot of women, like any other movies telling other types of human issues, great movie.
