Michael Blowen Boston Globe A sparkling comedy that skips along on the strength of Matthew Broderick's deceptively difficult performance. Jul 30, 2024 Full Review Paul Attanasio Washington Post The whole script is off-balance. Jan 3, 2018 Full Review Kathleen Carroll New York Daily News "Ferris Bueller" has some cheerfully zany scenes, but lacks the originality and verve of Hughes' previous telltale teen comedies. Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 10, 2016 Full Review Dan Webster Spokesman-Review (Washington) May be [John Hughes'] best film to date. Funny, poignant and rebellious, "Ferris Bueller" is the most cinematically controlled of Hughes' directorial efforts. It speaks to all ages. Rated: 4/4 Jul 27, 2024 Full Review George Kowalik Vague Visages If Ferris Bueller and his day off resemble something else universal, it is liberation. In the context of the journey, this is best understood as the ability to be in transit. Oct 4, 2023 Full Review Justin Brown Medium Popcorn I still enjoyed this but worry about how much a reboot will dilute this classic, which seems inevitable at this point. He's so charismatic... And who simply wants to take a day off from school to enjoy life; to stop and smell the roses; and to stop and enjoy his big beautiful hometown of Chicago... JUST FOR A DAY...And so he's made the big epic/heroic decision TO PLAY HOOKEY for one day...That's the plot here...And the whole thing devolves into a big epic battle between Ferris and his School Principal and local Truant Officer Ed Rooney... A big epic cat and mouse game...And the whole thing is great fun; this classic caper comedy where the good guy for once get's away with it! And the lines here are so famous and beloved that they've become cultural landmarks...Catchphrases like "anyone? Anyone? Bueller?". So HIGHLY RECOMMENDED is this great Chicago classic about the importance of playing HOOKEY!... About the importance of stopping and enjoying life!..before it's too late.
