      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald are eminently likable, and film is pleasantly sentimental, but Going My Way suffers from a surplus of sweetness.

SMH Staff Sydney Morning Herald It is a slice of life, illuminated by those flashes of rich detail by which McCarey so often makes beauty out of the commonplace. Feb 5, 2020 Full Review Kate Cameron New York Daily News Paramount may have made a more appealing, more tenderly human and amusing picture than "Going My Way," during its many years of film-making, but if so, I have missed it. Feb 17, 2015 Full Review James Berardinelli ReelViews There's nothing special or memorable about this overlong endeavor, the first of two motion pictures to feature Bing Crosby's insufferably noble Father Chuck O'Malley. Victor T Has not aged well at all. How Bing won the Oscar for this performance escapes me. The film is now considered schmaltz even though winning multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/17/23 Full Review Liam D While Bing Crosby shines this movie is too long and boring but it's also doesn't deserve the best picture Oscar Win Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Raymond S sentimental, old view of Roman Catholic clergy, Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/25/22 Full Review Audience Member It's a crowded field to decide the worst winner of an Oscar best picture but this is a strong contender. Pretty much just an excuse for Bing to do loads of singing. This weird gang of kids whore led by a much older kid, really odd, are immediately reformed into choir boys. Priest Bing is just a nice man working with a grouchy Irishman. There's pretty much nothing to see here, no edge to the film, no real angle. The moral of the story seems to be.... be nice. It's weak. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Frances H Although the plot is almost non-existent, the stars are good, the songs lovely and lively and the singing is just wonderful! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/22/20 Full Review william d Not much really happens over the course of 2+ hours. I can only recommend if you're a fan of Crosby's singing.
