Audience Member I really enjoyed the style of this film and its different view and portrayal of Japanese History. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Well acted, thoughtfull samuri flic....I enjoyed it thoroughly... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Strange as it may be, its symbolism eluding in part viewer's grasp, the battle between two duelist trascending to a cosmic conflict of apocalyptic might (as hellish as heavenly) is a powerful sight, moreso in a movie less graceful and polished, but vigorously dirtier, than your average chambara. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Taking a well known (in Japan) piece of folklore concerning the Warrior Monk Benkei and his lord the heir to the defeated Genji Clan Yoshitsune and recasting them as rivals, mixes in some philosophy and metaphysics and adding a feeling of apocalyptic doom this film is....interesting. First I'll see I love the way it was filmed 9 out of 10 times location shooting is preferable to shooting in a studio IMHO. That said the sword fights never really did it for me, Yoshitsune and his companions cut threw the rival Heike Samurai like they weren't there, I honest to God spent half the movie wondering how the Genji could have been defeated (Now the same thing happens in Goemon but it didn't bother me, because Goemon very early on establishes itself as a comic book/fantasy well Gojoe keeps trying to stay grounded). Seriously Yoshitsune doesn't even break a sweat. There's also a crap ton of plot dealing with Buddhism and Japanese Folk Lore that I'm pretty sure went over my head. I feel another viewing is in order somewhere down the road, preferably after reading up on the Japanese Schools of Buddhism, right now I can only really give it 3 stars. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member While I don't pretend to have fully developed an aesthetic sense for supernatural Japanese samurai films set in the Middle Ages, it would seem that Gojoe tries to juggle too much for two long of a period of time and ultimately suffers for it. Anton Bitel Projected Figures Eclipsing its violent battles with haunting metaphysics, Gojoe is a Japanese period piece like no other. Bleak, apocalyptic and demonically intense, it is a film to watch at the end of the world. Mar 14, 2011 Full Review Read all reviews
