What to Know

Critics Consensus

A change of venue -- and more sentimentality and violence -- can't obscure the fact that Home Alone 2: Lost in New York is a less inspired facsimile of its predecessor.

Duane Byrge The Hollywood Reporter Culkin is breezily winning once again as the self-reliant kid alone, while Pesci and Stern deserve combat metals (especially Stern) to the bricks and slings they endure. Nov 20, 2019 Full Review Janet Maslin New York Times It's much more violent than the first film's comparable set of dirty tricks. And Kevin, removed from his embattled home, seems much more cavalier, possibly even meaner than his bullying older brother, Buzz (Devin Ratray). Jun 11, 2019 Full Review Dave Kehr Chicago Tribune The pleasures here are entirely cruel, with an unhealthy concentration on the suffering of the victims, on the thudding impact of various objects against their heads, on their howls of agony. Rated: 2/4 Jun 11, 2019 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies Home Alone 2: Lost in New York manages to up the stakes while Kevin has to fend for himself in a very different environment. Dec 20, 2021 Full Review PJ Nabarro Patrick Nabarro Sorely lacks the situational specificity and just the vague whiff of 'this could actually happen' from the previous film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/28/24 Full Review Audience Member Its amazing it improves on the things that the first movie didnt do so well its a timeless classic 9,8/10 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/27/24 Full Review Rowan C Home Alone in New York was a very cool concept and Kevin relives the same story as the first movie. Kevin gets in trouble the night before they were supposed to go to Florida and when morning came, the alarms did not go off. Kevins' mom Kate had to make sure that Kevin was in the airport express car and he was. Kevin managed to get on the wrong flight because he was following someone that looked like his Dad. Kate only realized that Kevin was gone when they were doing baggage in Miami. Kevin is having the time of his life in New York committing credit card fraud off of his Dads' bank account, getting toys and eating ice cream. We see the return of the Wet Bandits as they plan a huge heist of a toy store that is donating their money to charity for the hospital. While this is happening, the cops finally track Kevin to New York City and that is when the family left Miami. Miami was very gloomy and it was raining all of the time, so the kids were very excited to go to New York. Kevin is on the run because he was kicked out of the Plaza Hotel for commiting credit card fraud. Kevin soon witnessess the Wet Bandits stealing money from the toy store, so he interrupts it with a rock and of course a trap. They chase Kevin throughout the city and Kevin leads them to a trapped house. The Wet Bandits go through the ringer and they finally capture Kevin going into the park. The Wet Bandits walk right into a trap and the bird lady who is played by Brenda Fricker throws seeds on them in which the pigeons attack them. They get arrested and Kevin runs to go see the big tree in New York City. Kevins' mom finds him looking at the Christmas tree and this was such a great thing because right before Kevin was wishing to see his Mom again. They all stay the night in the Plaza Hotel and wake up to a bunch of presents given by the CEO of the toy shop Duncan who is played by Eddie Bracken. Kevins' dad Peter who is played by Jhon Heard screams at the end of the movie when he finds out that Kevin spent $967 on room service. Overall, I liked this movie a lot and again it shows a very important message that family means everything. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/31/24 Full Review Read all reviews
