Critics Consensus

A change of venue -- and more sentimentality and violence -- can't obscure the fact that Home Alone 2: Lost in New York is a less inspired facsimile of its predecessor.

Duane Byrge The Hollywood Reporter Culkin is breezily winning once again as the self-reliant kid alone, while Pesci and Stern deserve combat metals (especially Stern) to the bricks and slings they endure. And Kevin, removed from his embattled home, seems much more cavalier, possibly even meaner than his bullying older brother, Buzz (Devin Ratray). Audience Member Film Review: Home Alone 2: Lost in New York Home Alone 2, is a really fun and comedic Christmas holiday movie that brings back everything we loved about the first Home Alone and takes it up a notch. This movie follows Kevin McCallister, a young kid, as he accidentally ends up in New York City while the rest of his family goes to Florida to enjoy a Christmas vacation. If you enjoyed the first Home Alone or love Christmas movies in general, such as Elf or The Santa Clause, this movie is the right watch for you. The story is similar to the first movie. Kevin ends up alone, as he boards the wrong flight, but this time he has accidentally lands in a different city, with only a bag containing his dad’s belongings. Kevin ends up staying in a luxury hotel. But things get concerning, when Kevin runs into the “Wet Bandits”, Harry and Marv. Two thieves who have recently escaped from jail, and are planning to rob a toy store that have been collecting money to make a donation. Kevin can’t let that happen, so he sets up his booby traps to get the thieves out of the store and trigger the alarm. Macaulay Culkin plays a phenomenal role as Kevin, bringing the same funny and smart attitude that was previously showcased in the first Home Alone movie. Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern are also entertaining as the clumsy bad guys, as their reactions to Kevin’s traps are some of the best parts of the movie. Tim Curry, who plays the role of a mean hotel worker, is also hilarious with his sneaky looks and fancy attitude. The movie does a great job making New York City feel magical at Christmas, and showcasing what New York City has to offer, with the lights, Christmas trees, and snowy streets make it feel like the perfect holiday destination. It uses many of the film techniques we used in class, from camera angles to character distance, to get the audience to focus on certain objects and characters. The movie has a good pace, mixing funny moments with some sweet ones. Kevin’s scenes with the Pigeon Lady add a nice message about friendship and kindness. The music and sounds make the movie even better. The music brings back the classic Home Alone feel while mixing some new Christmas tunes that make everything even more fun. The funny sound effects during Kevin’s traps make the movie more engaging, and allow for a good laugh. When you compare this movie to other Christmas movies, it is definitely one of the best. Even though it’s similar to the first movie, the New York setting makes it feel different and exciting. Although some may argue it’s not as good as the original, it’s still an amazing Christmas movie to watch every year. Overall, Home Alone 2 is an awesome holiday movie that all ages can enjoy. It has hilarious moments, a sweet message, and a Christmas feel that makes it perfect for the holiday season. Whether you’ve seen it before or are watching it for the first time, it’s a great movie that never gets old. Definitely a must-watch for Christmas!
