Dennis S Part Muslim apologetics (striking a woman doesn't *really* mean striking a woman. Jihad isn't nearly as frightening as it sounds... stuff like that), Part overused and predictable immigrant tropes, part white people stereotypes, part mediocre acting, and what do you get? Meh. For a better treatment of the theme watch Under the Shadow or Four Lions. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/31/22 Full Review Audience Member Great work by the cast and director. Definitely watch this one! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member An exhilarating journey of families divided on culture, tradition and way of life. An excellent watch, highly recommended. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Kamran K If you're looking for your next BIPOC film to watch and female filmmaker to support, I'd highly recommend Iram Parveen Bilal's I'll Meet You There - Bismil. The film currently boasts an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, press coverage by The New York Times, NPR, and many others, and was slated for a SXSW premiere, only to be derailed due to COVID. A beautiful story about the bond between a single parent and their child, a young adult finding balance between faith and freedom, and the impact of biased surveillance of prejudice against minorities. Do not underestimate the power of your viewing, rating, and recommending the film. Each of these actions is a vote for more of this content to be greenlit, additional opportunities for female filmmakers to be created, and an indirect boycott against the stereotypical depiction of minorities in film. The film is available on all major platforms http://illmeetyoutherethefilm.com/watch-at-home/ but if you have the ability to choose, iTunes provides the best ROI for the courageous investors who backed the film in its infancy. Iram Parveen Bilal is one of the hardest working people I know and has poured her heart and soul into this film over the past ten years. Faran Tahir who stars in the film and portrays Majeed beautifully is someone I'm fortunate to have had as a mentor early in my career. At a time when few successful South Asians could be found on screen in Hollywood and words from someone of his caliber had the power to encourage or discourage, he was nothing short of generous and elated in his advice and support. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/21 Full Review Audience Member I saw the film at SWSW 2020 online. Powerful performances. Definitely a director to watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A truly touching story that gives a glimpse into life experiences I do not understand nearly enough.
