Critics Consensus

Cary Fukunaga directs a fiery and elegant adaptation of Charlotte Bronte's classic novel, and Mia Wasikowska delivers possibly the best portrayal of the title character ever.

What it does right it does very right. It is stunningly mounted, for example... But what it does wrong is fatal, and the error is this: it just isn't passionate or sexy enough. Go to Full Review

Jane Eyre triumphs with a suitably bleak landscape and an excellent performance from Michael Fassbender, but the restrained tone lets it down. Go to Full Review

Screenwriter Moira Buffini sticks pretty closely to the novel, and director Cary Fukunaga conjures a drab tone that nicely sets off the characters' violent but rigidly controlled passions. Go to Full Review

This version of “Jane Eyre” is more of an exploration of old-school female empowerment and not letting a long string of defeats get the best of you. If anyone ever had multiple reasons to repeatedly throw in the towel and give up, it would be Jane. Go to Full Review

Daniel B @observor 3d They rushed the romance too much between the two main characters which undermines the whole thing, but good acting and scenery. See more lovely A Aug 15 It's a very visually stunning film, but it lacks everything else. Having read the book, I liked how some passages were adapted, but a lot of the bigger scenes and plotlines were ignored or poorly done. The story feels rushed thus resulting in a lack of chemistry between the main characters. The book is very long, so it is difficult to adapt into a 2 hour film. But still, I think it could have been done better. The actors were great though, just not the best script or direction. See more Glafira Regina O Jul 19 Will do. The film, compared to the book, is rather weak. The characters feel bland, and Mia is totally miscast. She's not Jane—neither in appearance nor demeanour. And it’s not just the famously reserved nature of English ladies—it’s a complete miss when it comes to capturing the essence of the character. At least Fassbender brought some charisma to the table. The plot is overly simplified, which is understandable—trying to squeeze 670 pages into 2 hours is just too much, and everything ends up feeling rushed and compressed. What I did like was the chemistry between Mia and Fassbender. That moment when she cries out, “God help me!” as she begs for the strength to resist Rochester, my heart shattered. I completely believed her. See more Ahmed A Jul 12 The proposal scene is so great; the visuals are also great, but not much for the rest of it. The pacing of the movie hurt it so much I felt like I was watching an early cut of it. The third act failed horribly with little to no payoff for what had been built up. See more James C Apr 10 Beautifully filmed, a feast for the eyes. An articulate telling of a classic tale. Deeply disturbing and inspiring. See more HMF B Feb 14 Simple and beautiful at once. Stunning photography and great acting. A movie for my heart. See more Read all reviews
