      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Hard-hitting and honest yet sensitive, King Jack is an uncommonly affecting coming-of-age drama and a powerful calling card for debuting writer-director Felix Thompson.

Rick P I hate movies that rely on horrible bullying to get the audience to root for the main character, and then leave you wanting the justice that never comes. King Jack delivers exactly that. Not only does it leave you with a feeling of justice not served, but it's totally unbelievable: the way the things are allowed to happen to the main character without any intervention from older kids or parents or the authorities just isn't plausible. One star, and I think I‘m being generous giving it that… Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/10/23 Full Review georgan g Touching, well acted & better-than-usual coming of age flick. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member One of my favorites. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Great film! Just exquisite and heartwarming and beautiful. I was with Jack every step of the way. Best movie I've seen about bullying, most true to life. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member King Jack is somewhat methodical in its approach to teenage struggles, yet it drives home its message with such uncompromising rawness that it cannot (and should not) be ignored. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Charlie Plummer really owns this movie. Excellent. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Tasha Robinson The Verge Thompson's leads are so natural in their roles, and his filmmaking is so immediate and intimate, that King Jack is instantly absorbing. Jun 10, 2016 Full Review Nick Allen RogerEbert.com Lacking personality or insight, "King Jack" is a ho-hum tale of young aggression-been there, bruised that. Rated: 2/4 Jun 10, 2016 Full Review Michael Rechtshaffen Los Angeles Times Thanks to a strongly rooted lead performance by Charlie Plummer as a 15-year-old small-town kid who's well on his way to a stint in juvenile detention, "King Jack" still strikes a resonant chord. Jun 9, 2016 Full Review Morgan Rojas Cinemacy The story is not groundbreaking and, certainly, this type of cliché, coming-of-age film has been told before and will be again, but this one makes for a great addition to the genre. Aug 6, 2018 Full Review Paul M. Bradshaw Total Film Its slight stuff, sure, but King Jack is a film thats executed with smarts and sensitivity. Rated: 3/5 Jan 2, 2017 Full Review Mike McCahill MovieMail [Director Thompson] has a particular ally in Plummer, a bashed-up presence more compelling than a dozen stage-school brats, displaying a fortitude you warm to even as you're watching all cockiness being kicked from his form.
