Critics Consensus

Despite the relaxed, easy chemistry of stars Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, Larry Crowne is surprisingly bland and conventional.

Deborah Ross The Spectator Tom Hanks directs himself in this, and also wrote the original script, so if you ever thought you can't have too much Hanks here is something else to blow your mind: you so, so can. Aug 31, 2018 Full Review Leah Rozen TheWrap An exceedingly minor entry on already impressive resums. Oct 7, 2011 Full Review Anthony Lane The New Yorker To pluck romantic comedy from the jaws of a social crisis is a laudable project, worthy of Preston Sturges, and it's a pity that this featherlight drama-written by Tom Hanks and Nia Vardalos, and directed by Hanks himself-should falter in its task. Jul 18, 2011 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson The film delivers the right charming notes at the right kind of dramatic time. Rated: 4/5 Jul 20, 2025 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review After appearing together in Charlie Wilson’s War, Hanks and Roberts reunite and display plenty of chemistry in this rather plain, unpretentious, but somewhat uninvolving romantic comedy. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 11, 2023 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com This movie may not change your life, but if you give yourself to it you'll leave the theater with a smile on your face. Robert W I love Tom Hanks as an actor but I'm afraid this outing is derivative and unbelievable. Despite the acting talent on display this effort falls way short of even the average romantic comedy. We're expected to believe that because Larry Crowne rides a scooter he is adopted by a young, nubile, intellectual Aphrodite despite being at least a generation older than her. And then to cap it all love is fostered with his teacher after just one evening's doorstep fumbling. Advice: Watch "Notting Hill" or "A Man Called Otto" instead. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/20/25 Full Review Sheila G All the good movies on Netflix I have now watched and I am now watching the ones I rejected first time round. However, I came across Larry Crowe ( with an ‘e’) Q hysterical laughter and I’m afraid to say that was about the only laugh in the film. I like Tom Hanks and that’s the reason I watched it as most of his movies are worth watching. This was one of the worst movies I have seen in a very long time, lame stereotypes and absolutely no substance Don’t waste your time on this. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/16/25 Full Review Audience Member don’t exspect too much of a rom-com but with Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts? i mean it’s very cute and simple there is nothing more to say Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/08/25 Full Review David G Unbelievable rubbish. 2 great actors in their worst film ever. Embarrassingly bad. Rotten beyond belief… Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/25 Full Review David D It's sweet, a night in film, couple popcorn. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/25/25 Full Review Patty V This movie proved even great actors can make a bad movie😁That’s what made it fun! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/25 Full Review Read all reviews
