Critics Consensus

Live Free or Die Hard may be preposterous, but it's an efficient, action-packed summer popcorn flick with thrilling stunts and a commanding performance by Bruce Willis. Fans of the previous Die Hard films will not be disappointed.

David Ansen Newsweek But ultimately it's [Bruce] Willis who makes this loopy action movie so endearing...Nobody dies it better. Feb 6, 2018 Full Review Kim Newman Sight & Sound Though it's mostly entertaining (if overlong), there is a sense that the whole thing has become somewhat rote. Jun 18, 2012 Full Review Ben Walters Time Out Len Wiseman handles many of the set-pieces with flair and tension. Rated: 3/5 Nov 17, 2011 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Even though NYPD Det. John McClane doesn’t always feel like the McClane we know and love, director Len Wiseman does such a wonderful job orchestrating bravado shootouts, fights, and chases that our most basic entertainment needs are met. Rated: 3/4 Jan 6, 2024 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Audiences looking for heartfelt drama and a realistic plot are certainly courting the wrong movie. Rated: 7/10 Nov 26, 2020 Full Review Leigh Paatsch Herald Sun (Australia) This worthy addition to the Die Hard franchise sticks to a refreshingly old-fashioned (but no less effective) action formula throughout. Kiefer Favorite movie, I always comeback to this Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/28/25 Full Review David D Another stonking chapter in the series. Enjoy! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/27/25 Full Review CaptainBoulder T Absolutely fun movie that comes close to the first one Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/16/25 Full Review Brian H Most of the new cast is of great benefit. They do a very nice job but it just isn't as good of a script or plot as the Original or some of the other sequels. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/03/25 Full Review Kid R. Pretty good but not great Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/03/25 Full Review tim s My introduction to the Die Hard franchise came in the form of Live Free or Die Hard. While it's watered down by the PG-13 rating, the action is creative, and Bruce Willis returns to the role of John McClane with as much sarcasm as he's ever had. In an innovative departure from the series' formula, he's up against a cyberterrorist. This creates a new element where McClane's old-fashioned heroism is in stark contrast to modern techno-villainy.
