What to Know

Critics Consensus

Lon Chaney's typically strong performance -- and terrifying makeup -- casts an eerie spell in this solid detective thriller.

Wilella Waldorf New York Post It's not dull and it's not thrilling. Jan 11, 2022 Full Review Mae Tinee Chicago Tribune Especially would it be a shame to tattle on a film where suspense has been so admirably sustained by adept direction; a film that boasts a star of such magnitude and luster; a film with so splendid a supporting cast! Jan 11, 2022 Full Review Norbert Lusk Los Angeles Times Lon Chaney and Tod Browning are to be congratulated on the excellent picture... London After Midnight is conceded to be their best since The Unholy Three. Jan 11, 2022 Full Review Edgar Waite San Francisco Examiner Nerves all right? Got good control of yourself? Don't feel a bit jumpy? Then swallow a couple of aspirin tablets, and if you like real water-tight thrillers, drop in to see London After Midnight. Jan 11, 2022 Full Review Robert F. Sisk Baltimore Sun The film, especially in those episodes in the house of the vampires, has a creepy, loathsome quality that is at once eerie, repulsive, fascinating and powerful. Therein lies much of its strength. Jan 11, 2022 Full Review Courant Staff Hartford Courant Materialization of a ghost, as performed by medium, is produced before the camera in an amazing sequence in the uncanny new story. Owen R I loved this film my favorite part was when batman came and said its batman time and started fighting darth vader and his pet dog slumbalicious dingleman in zimbabwae. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/26/23 Full Review Audience Member This is one of the most sought after lost films of the silent era. This was the most commercially successful collaborative film between Chaney and Browning. The storyline is somewhat incoherent and nonsensical. It is a story certain to disturb for its time. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the great lost films, but since you can't watch, it can only remain in the minds of us all who were fortunate enough to watch it, I sadly was not one of them. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Ranking for he short photograph version. Shows Lon Chaney's skill with disguise, you can feel the actors emotions in just photos. I was impressed Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Tod Browning and Lon Chaney deliver a classic horror. Unfortunately this is a lost film, and the only available version is comprised of still pictures. Therefore, this is very difficult if not impossible to score impartially. Having viewed this piecemeal version, I understood the story and again can only imagine the delivery from a master such as Lon Chaney. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Since a studio fire in 1967, all that remains of this 1927 silent film is a restored still-frame version - it is like a tantalizing glimpse into what could have been a great film... Still, it is remarkably good and boasts the rich masquerading talents of Lon Chaney. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
