Critics Consensus

Looking Glass gives Nicolas Cage a chance to turn in an atypically understated performance, but this is still a suspense thriller with a fatal dearth of suspense or thrills.

Eric Kohn indieWire The result is a hollow vehicle that Cage simply floats through on autopilot, and he peers through a mirror at a more exciting world beyond his grasp, it's impossible not to relate. Rated: D Feb 20, 2018 Full Review Joe Leydon Variety Nicolas Cage dials it down a few notches for a derivate thriller about strange doings at a desert motel. Feb 18, 2018 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times Nicolas Cage's starring presence explains why it's such a compelling and offbeat little thriller. Rated: 3/4 Feb 16, 2018 Full Review Emilie Black Cinema Crazed Looking Glass is a surprisingly not unhinged Nicolas Cage film that works. Rated: 3.5/5 Apr 12, 2020 Full Review Ryan Pollard Starburst Despite being billed as a suspense thriller, there is zero suspense throughout, questions that are raised never answered satisfyingly, and even as it throws a twist towards the end, there are so few characters here that you just don't give a damn about. Rated: 2/10 Apr 6, 2018 Full Review Alex Arabian Film Inquiry Looking Glass wastes its talented cast on poor writing filled with clich after clich, an odd and uninviting artistic vision from the ground up, thinly developed characters, and an overabundance of narratives and plot devices. Martin B Cage earns it 3 stars but it is as bad as the ratings suggest. Superficial is the only way to define it. All the characters and plot superficial, very linear with no sub plots that are explored, camera on Nick Cage all the time the way most of his movies are. A predictible ending, Cage commits multiple felonies then gets in his truck and drives away like they ran out of money and had to end it as if running resolved anything. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/26/24 Full Review Mark B Not horrible but not good. Kind of a who cares. You think there will be some sinister reveal that the movie builds to. There is not. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/24 Full Review Dinos K Classic Nicolas Cage's movie. Since 2000 he only makes mindless, weird movies with only reason to make wonderful memes. It's so sad cause Cage was once a good actor Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/08/24 Full Review Giorgio G An interesting idea, unfortunately completely ruined by a lousy script and a very mediocre director. When the movie could actually end with a bang and make it worthwhile, it just receices a simple "Plop", which leaves you with the thought: WtF??? For this I had been watching Nicolas and Robin for nearly 2 hours?! Even I could have done a better directing job. 3 1/2 out of 10 points. P.S: When it comes to the actors and their performances Bill Bolender as the ex-owner of the motel is the only one who does a great job, and he only appears for a few minutes. The others are all extremely pale as if they were tired and just wanted to do the minimum to get their paychecks and leave. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/13/23 Full Review This movie doesn't show the symbolic meanings because of the stupid story. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/14/23 Full Review Stoner J A decent enough mystery flick, unfairly panned, but I see why. Bottom line is it does keep you guessing why all the secrecy in this small town and, we'll most of the mystery coming to light at the end, except for why everyone requests room number 10???. It is rather annoying though how cage just doesn't open his mouth to communicate with ANYBODY the whole time but I'm glad I gave this a try.
