Critics Consensus

This jukebox musical is full of fluffy fun but rough singing voices and a campy tone might not make you feel like "You Can Dance" the whole 90 minutes.

Deborah Ross The Spectator Mamma Mia has been made with the most delicious, joyful abandon and all it asks is that you joyfully and deliciously abandon yourself to it and don't make too many observations. Aug 23, 2018 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian The story is ... urh. No film has ever had a more irrelevant story. Rated: 1/5 Oct 18, 2008 Full Review Kenneth Turan Los Angeles Times A sage once advised being wary of movies in which the people on screen are having more fun than the people in the audience. Mamma mia, was that good advice. Rated: 2/5 Oct 18, 2008 Full Review Mary Kassel Screen Rant Part of the reason we still talk about Mamma Mia! is the fact that it's a chaotic explosion, which elevates the magic & romance of the story. Rated: 5/10 Jul 16, 2025 Full Review Annlee Ellingson CineWomen An experienced, award-winning theater and opera director, Phyllida Lloyd exerts keen control of the film’s energy, if not its specious plot. Jul 28, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The film’s greatest pleasures derive from the star factor. Namely, Meryl Streep. Is there anything this woman can’t do? Great I love this movie and it’s even better in a theater. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/24/25 Full Review Flory Love this movie, this was my best Mothers Day ! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/15/23 Full Review Melissa Loved getting to watch one of my favorite movies in the theatre again!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/10/23 Full Review Rishi this movie was for the gays and for the gays only Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/07/22 Full Review Jelisije J A fun mediocre musical film that has actors that really can't sing for anything but at least they try. First time that I am introduced to this story and I found it incredibly lackluster especially with the ending that was given. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/13/25 Full Review Christian M This is a love-hate relationship. The first thing that stands out in ‘Mamma Mia’ is its absurdly exaggerated humor. During the first hour, this comedic tone can be difficult to digest; it doesn’t become unbearable, but it does create a certain sense of fatigue. The characters, for their part, are among the least charismatic in a modern musical: forced, superficial, and at times, off-putting. The story, centered on deceit, secrets, and family betrayals, also fails to offer much narrative interest, leaving the viewer with little reason to become emotionally invested. The film’s true strength is undoubtedly its musical component. The ABBA songs are well performed and feel energetic; however, for those who are not fans of musicals, it is difficult to enjoy much beyond the surface. In the first half, the film may feel tiresome and unappealing, though it gains some momentum as it progresses. The dialogue fulfills its function but does not provide particularly engaging or memorable moments. In terms of acting, the chemistry between Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgård is notable and stands out as one of the film’s most enjoyable elements. Meryl Streep brings her usual charisma and delivers moments of charm, while Amanda Seyfried performs adequately, although her character lacks the strength to establish a genuine connection with the audience. I personally preferred her role in ‘Jennifer’s Body’, a film I didn’t even enjoy at the time. Overall, ‘Mamma Mia’ holds up as a decent piece of cinema, supported by its music and some enjoyable interactions among the male cast, but it lacks narrative depth and compelling characters. It is not a film that leaves a lasting impact, and, at least from my perspective, it does not generate interest in watching its sequel.
