Critics Consensus

This jukebox musical is full of fluffy fun but rough singing voices and a campy tone might not make you feel like "You Can Dance" the whole 90 minutes.

Deborah Ross The Spectator Mamma Mia has been made with the most delicious, joyful abandon and all it asks is that you joyfully and deliciously abandon yourself to it and don't make too many observations. Aug 23, 2018 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian The story is ... urh. No film has ever had a more irrelevant story. Rated: 1/5 Oct 18, 2008 Full Review Kenneth Turan Los Angeles Times A sage once advised being wary of movies in which the people on screen are having more fun than the people in the audience. Mamma mia, was that good advice. Rated: 2/5 Oct 18, 2008 Full Review Mary Kassel Screen Rant Part of the reason we still talk about Mamma Mia! is the fact that it's a chaotic explosion, which elevates the magic & romance of the story. Rated: 5/10 Jul 16, 2025 Full Review Annlee Ellingson CineWomen An experienced, award-winning theater and opera director, Phyllida Lloyd exerts keen control of the film’s energy, if not its specious plot. Jul 28, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The film’s greatest pleasures derive from the star factor. Namely, Meryl Streep. Is there anything this woman can’t do? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/10/23 Full Review Rishi this movie was for the gays and for the gays only Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/07/22 Full Review Keroppi C I literally cry to this movieww every time I watch it, and the song with SOS with Meryl and pierce is literally on repeat for me Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/02/25 Full Review Nic S For years, I’ve known Mamma Mia! is beloved. I’ve liked some ABBA songs. Finally, I’ve sat down to watch it, and I really enjoyed it. I’m surprised I’ve never really felt the pull to check it out. Better late than never. Stellar casting with Amanda Seyfried and Meryl Streep at the helm effortlessly playing mother / daughter and holding the fort down throughout their multiple numbers as well as the big name actors playing each past lover with their own distinct personalities and stances. All the components of the film making process were so aligned. It felt like everyone involved had a great time and had such great love for this project. The enigmatic energy and admiration definitely came through on screen. Set in Greece, the filming locations were absolutely stunning. The cinematographer got every shot whether it was at the sun-kissed beach or the night party - the colours so vivid and pleasing to look at. Even the camera work and direction was incredibly dynamic, “Mamma Mia!” similarly harkened back to the great Movie Musicals of the mid last century. The film leans heavily into the camp and buoyancy of it all - wild feather boas, multiple scene / outfit changes, BIG flash mobs and silly humour, while staying grounded in its small island setting. The whole concept of “Who’s the Father?” amidst loved ones coming together for a wedding is in itself a delicious concept. “Mamma Mia!” should have been a perfect movie. But, a slight gripe I have is, unexpectedly, the music. Since these songs were not originally written for a musical, they are kind of generic. Whether it be about relationships, friendships, love or loss, the song’s contents don’t really relate to the movie and are mainly just an accent or icing to the cake. More than half way through, I felt myself sigh when another song came on. The transition from story to musical moment sometimes were jarring and sudden. After a while, it gave off “Glee”, in a alright karaoke way. Additionally, outside of the mains, the rest of the cast aren’t particularly skilled singers, so a performance or two can fall quite flat. You can act well, but can you sing the song well, or on pitch? What saves the songs is that they use ABBA’s music. Somehow, ABBA’s catalogue is both aesthetically flamboyant and theatrical, addictively catchy with incredibly soaring instrumentals that are all quite cohesive. ABBA acquaints itself very well to the musical theatre format. Despite a minor desire for the songs’ execution, “Mamma Mia!” is pure cotton candy, escapism foder, that instinctively lifts anyones spirits up. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/20/25 Full Review Linda C Just saw a retro replay of this. I might not like some of the themes in show but I enjoyed it. The music was good. Was fun that some highschool girls went out of movie singing. I could tell the enjoyed it. I do love some of the music Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/11/25 Full Review Read all reviews
