Critics Consensus

This jukebox musical is full of fluffy fun but rough singing voices and a campy tone might not make you feel like "You Can Dance" the whole 90 minutes.

Deborah Ross The Spectator Mamma Mia has been made with the most delicious, joyful abandon and all it asks is that you joyfully and deliciously abandon yourself to it and don't make too many observations. Jul 28, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The film’s greatest pleasures derive from the star factor. Namely, Meryl Streep. Is there anything this woman can’t do? Flory Love this movie, this was my best Mothers Day ! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/15/23 Full Review Melissa Loved getting to watch one of my favorite movies in the theatre again!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/10/23 Full Review Rishi this movie was for the gays and for the gays only Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/07/22 Full Review Matthew D Amanda Seyfried is an angel and everyone is having so much fun singing ABBA! Director Phyllida Lloyd’s jukebox musical romantic-comedy Mamma Mia! (2008) is tons of fun. Lloyd never lets her cast take it too seriously as the entire is just dancing around and launching into these iconic ABBA pop songs. Catherine Johnson’s script is playful, funny, and heartfelt with a simple and sweet plot of a girl wanting to meet her birth father, so she invites her mom’s ex-boyfriends to her wedding. Hearing all of these wonderfully written, beautifully sung, and super catchy ABBA songs again is always a treat. Mamma Mia! has aged well with its campy tone and strong performances from a delightful cast. They just look like they all had a blast filming Mamma Mia! Amanda Seyfried is incredible in Mamma Mia! as the heroine Sophie Sheridan. Her lovely singing tone is heavenly. Her powerful voice really carries and she does several fantastic renditions of classic ABBA tunes. Her acting is as endearing as ever with a natural sweetness that lets you care about Sophie finding her real dad to walk her down the aisle. Amanda Seyfriend is charming, gorgeous, and boasts a captivating vocal performance as well. I’m happy they chose Seyfried as Streep’s daughter for really convincing casting. Meryl Streep is excellent as the independent minded mother of Sophie named Donna Sheridan. I really have grown fond of Streep’s singing here as she actually impressed me hearing her emotional versions of ABBA’s slick pop songs. Pierce Brosnan is fun as the nurturing paternal figure of Sam Carmichael, giving it his all to try and sing as well as he can. Colin Firth has a pleasant manner as Harry Bright and a pretty soft singing voice. Stellan Skarsgård looked like he had a riot playing sailor Bill Anderson, and obviously Sophie’s blonde and blue eyed father, considering Amanda Seyfried’s looks compared to the other two brunettes. Julie Walters is crazy as Rosie Mulligan with a very playful and rowdy performance. Christine Baranski steals all of her scenes with her magnificent singing voice as Tanya Chesham-Leigh. Dominic Cooper is nice enough as Seyfried’s handsome love interest Sky Rymand. Editor Lesley Walker really lets us hear and see the whole performance of each song without obnoxious cuts away from the performers. Cinematographer Haris Zambarloukos captures the lush beauty of this Greek island in stunning wide shots. I like the sweeping camera movements to show us everyone and the natural landscapes. The more vulnerable dramatic scenes in close-ups felt appropriate. John Higgins’ bright lighting and the upbeat dance choreography by Anthony Van Laast and Nichola Treherne is excellent. All of ABBA’s songs by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, Stig Anderson, Agnetha Fältskog, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad all still hold up beautifully. Ann Roth’s costumes are really colorful and keep in line with relaxed island fashion. In short, Mamma Mia! is simply an entertaining tribute to ABBA with a fabulous ensemble led by Amanda Seyfried and Meryl Streep. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Jeannette G Ghastly, corny stuff! With Abbas melancholy thrown in! A waste of acting talent. Yuck! Watch "Buona Sera, Mrs Campbell" instead! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/05/25 Full Review DANIEL JOSEPH B One of my favorite when I was a kid. I really like how the character’s act and they have great voices when singing. I think I liked this movie the way they had musical scene’s in it, bringing a good impact to the movie. Worth a watch, you will truly enjoy it. This is also the reason how I met my all time favorite pop group ABBA. All their songs are from ABBA, basically this movie was a based from a pop group ABBA. It was great, the way they act through the song’s, you can really feel their emotion’s by them singing it, Truly great! If you love this movie, you will definitely will love ABBA. So watch the movie and listen to ABBA! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/09/24 Full Review Read all reviews
