A love-it-or-hate-it experience, Moulin Rouge is all style, all giddy, over-the-top spectacle. But it's also daring in its vision and wildly original.

Jack Mathews New York Daily News Moulin Rouge is an audacious, snappy visual and emotional feast of dishes both familiar and fresh. Rated: 3.5/4 Sep 5, 2023 Full Review Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald Kidman and McGregor sparkle together; some songs enchant, a fine supporting cast give us some laughs, but it's not enough. There is nothing to savour, to reflect on. It's a film where style is in search of an idea. Sep 5, 2023 Full Review Joe Williams St. Louis Post-Dispatch Ultimately, the human component of Moulin Rouge is dwarfed by director Luhrmann's outlandish visuals and virtuoso use of music. It's unlikely that any other film this year will offer such a feast for the senses. Rated: 3.5/4 Sep 5, 2023 Full Review JD Duran InSession Film The story is filled with heartache, romance, jealousy and life...while some of it gets a little dull in the middle, overall it’s Luhrmann at his best. Rated: A- Aug 20, 2024 Full Review Rory Doherty InSession Film The film is unassailable and impenetrable; it is triumphantly indignant and courageously simplistic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/15/25 Full Review Nick P Watching Moulin Rouge! is like opening a music box from your childhood and finding it still sings the same hauntingly beautiful tune. I first saw this film when I was six years old, at my cousin’s house. Her mother had put it on, and we curled up on the couch together, wide-eyed, not knowing then that the whirlwind of glitter, love, and heartbreak on the screen would become part of my soul forever. We were neighbors back then—running barefoot between our semi-big homes, crossing the wide green lawns, and disappearing into that small magical forest between them. It was lush, secret, and full of imagination. Moulin Rouge! was exactly that for me: a forest of emotion, dreams, and beauty I didn’t yet understand, but felt deeply. The film, directed by Baz Luhrmann, is chaotic, romantic, and unapologetically theatrical. But for me, it was more than cinema—it was a mirror into my own inner world. From the vibrant reds and neon lights of the Parisian nightclub to the achingly poetic lines whispered between Christian and Satine, it awakened in me a love for art, music, storytelling, and the bittersweetness of life itself. And what stuck with me the most—what truly branded itself into my heart—was the phrase: “The show must go on.” As a child, I may not have fully grasped its weight, but I felt its truth. That even when you’re breaking inside, even when love is slipping through your fingers, you keep going. You carry beauty forward, no matter the pain. It was more than just a line—it became a philosophy I’ve carried through life. The editing is fast-paced, the costumes outrageous, and the soundtrack an explosion of modern pop reimagined through a bohemian lens. At first, it feels like madness—but beneath it all is a timeless tale of love and loss. Of risking everything for something beautiful and fragile. Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor’s performances hold nothing back. Their chemistry and tragedy felt larger than life to me, yet strangely personal. To this day, it defines me in some quiet, shimmering way. It taught me about emotion before I had the words to name it. And every time I hear “Come What May” or think about those final lines, I’m back in that warm room, with people I love, surrounded by the smell of summer grass, magic in the trees, and a movie that changed me. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/27/25 Full Review Jimmi B Only 1 original song rest of music is just confusing mash up of songs from different eras very confusing silly very hard to follow burlesque much better musical Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/27/25 Full Review Gareth v While style sometimes overpowers story (a common theme with Luhrmann), this is still a dazzling cinematic experience filled with clever musical mashups and plenty of colour. Luhrmann's best movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/23/25 Full Review Read all reviews
