Aldo G Maxwell Shane's last two Hollywood features as screenwriter/director before going to TV are well done, although box office flops. (The other film is the Edward G. Robinson mystery pic named Nightmare.) The Naked Street features a strong performance by Anthony Quinn as a mobster who forces a thug to marry his sister because he's impregnated her. A strong supporting cast. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/19/23 Full Review william k Standard crime melodrama is not too exciting, but is well-staged with a good cast. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member second rate film noir from the 2nd cycle. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member This film is described as mediocre. I agree. Quinn just passes as a mob boss, but Peter Graves adds nothing. The bright spot is Anne Bancroft who plays a mobster's sister much better than Talia Shire did. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Passable noirish crime drama with Graves the crusading reporter and many familiar character actors popping up here and there. Quinn is properly oily but Farley Granger is miscast looking more like he's fresh from prep school than the tenements. Anne Bancroft, during the first uneventful phase of her Hollywoood career, is wasted as Quinn's timourous sister all her fire banked into a nothing part. The script and direction are competent nothing more. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member A good cast is wasted in this weak gangster yarn. The story owes a lot to Hawks' far superior "Scarface". However, this is another film that was never released on video, so it was kind of cool to catch it on TCM.
