Jordan B 5d One of the best movies I’ve seen this decade honestly. I can’t even begin to properly explain how much I love it, but it seriously gave me the same chills that I’ve experienced watching some of my favorite movies ever in theaters. I guess that means it’s one of my favorite movies now lol. The ayahuasca scene through the credits were my favorite part haha just nonstop laughs, chills, scares, you name it. Seriously did not expect this but wow am I glad I took my family to come see this with me (they all loved it too)! Cannot believe this beautiful screenplay with a cast of entirely women (if I'm remembering correctly) was written by two men in their twenties. THE AYUHUASCA SEQUENCE ALONE you just gotta see it for yourself. And I love love love the ending. I laughed, cried, and my jaw dropped at some of the stuff they pulled off. At its core, the relationship between Gayatri and her Paati gives the entire movie its emotional pulse, beautifully contrasting genuine generational tradition with LA's wildly appropriated, whitewashed "wellness" culture. It’s funny, deeply relatable, and delivers sharp social commentary without ever feeling preachy. I wish it had been a bit scarier, but for a debut film, I absolutely loved it! Rish and Kanish have woven the cultural intricacies of the subject matter extremely well to produce a well written, well directed and entertaining movie. With the perfect mix of humor and thought provoking sequences (right from the opening scene) the movie keeps one continuously entertained and engaged, while it crescendos to a well orchestrated finale. I've already seen it twice, and the second viewing made me appreciate even more how much is packed into the themes, symbolism, and satire. What really stuck with me was the way the film uses horror and comedy to explore the Western commercialization and cultural appropriation of yoga. Gayatri's relationship with yoga through her grandmother feels completely different from the polished, commodified version she encounters at the LA studio, and that contrast gives the movie a lot more depth than I expected. It made me think more seriously about where yoga comes from, what can get lost when a cultural practice becomes a product, and who gets to benefit from it. I genuinely learned a lot from the film. It's been refreshing seeing independent films find an audience lately. Namaslay is one of those that really stuck with me after leaving the theater. 10/10. Support indie film.
