      Critics Consensus

The cast is good company and the story's sweet, but Never Too Late is too clunky and predictable to recommend.

tom m Reasonably entertaining. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A fun, feel good movie! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member "Never Too Late" is an Australian response to more recent retirement comedies-dramas, such as "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel". A rebellious pensioner, Vietnamese veteran friends, an early stage of Alzheimer's disease and an unfulfilled love that has lasted for 50 years are all packed into this movie whose plot is set in a nursing home and works surprisingly solidly – partially thanks to excellent leading actors James Cromwell ("Babe") and Jacki Weaver ("Silver Lining Playbook"). Charmingly predictable, but irresistibly warm. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the better movies i have seen for a while perpetuated in typical Australian laconic style, Thankfully it is a great cast who don't overact and you can flow through this movie with some good laughs and and a few tears, Somewhat predictable but who cares with such talent and good to see Dennis Waterman still as the ladies man you cant help but raise a smile for those in the know. A great score and some wonderful scenery add to this pleasant surprise. The teenage kid acts alongside some real talent here and completely holds his own. Grab a glass of red and sit back and enjoy this film for what it is. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Too many coincidences to make the story credible. It just wasn't a good, I heard one audible laugh in the audience. Good cast wasted on this lemon. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member I thought it was fabulous regardless of the plot I'm just happy to see such awesome actors. And we did have a good laugh. Victoria Luxford BBC.com Goes through the motions with familiar jokes about getting older, when something more moving could have been done. A waste of a great cast. Rated: 2/5 Feb 17, 2022 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald With this line-up, Lamprell should have turned the film into a celebration of some great screen careers. Instead, it winds up as a sad waste of talent. Rated: 2.5/5 Oct 21, 2020 Full Review Luke Buckmaster Guardian It's difficult - probably impossible - not to be charmed by the principal characters and their actors, all of whom can oscillate to pathos quickly. Rated: 3/5 Oct 21, 2020 Full Review Edward Porter Sunday Times (UK) The cosy sentimentalism of Mark Lamprell’s film is endearing, but the jokes are hopelessly clumsy, as are the misplaced efforts to say something serious about the war. Rated: 2/5 Feb 6, 2022 Full Review Dulcie Pearce The Sun (UK) It does carry some sweet moments and fans of a dad (or grandad) joke are in for the odd titter. But it’s never too late to watch something else. Rated: 3/5 Feb 4, 2022 Full Review Andrew Murray The Upcoming [N]o matter how great the intentions were in making this film, its torturously unfunny script, meandering plotline and all-round hideous presentation are irredeemable qualities.
