Con man Click Wiley (Pat O'Brien) and his girlfriend Gladys (Mary Astor) submit a composite picture to a Hollywood beauty contest and win the prize. Dubbing their make-believe starlet Dawn Glory, they successfully keep her a mystery. When they're forced to provide a radio voice for Dawn, Gladys convinces hotel maid Loretta (Marion Davies) to help. But famed aviator Bingo Nelson (Dick Powell) falls in love with Dawn's photo and proposes, and Loretta must decide whether to continue the act.
