Critics Consensus

Though Penelope has a charming cast and an appealing message, it ultimately suffers from faulty narrative and sloppy direction.

Peter Bradshaw Guardian I can truthfully say that watching this abysmal fantasy-comedy is less rewarding than being slapped across the face with a large wet fish. Rated: 1/5 Oct 18, 2008 Full Review Wendy Ide Times (UK) A modern-day fairytale, the film is tarted up like a hyperactive five-year-old's lurid fantasy of interior decor. Rated: 2/5 Oct 18, 2008 Full Review Anna Smith Film4 Is this meant to be dark comedy? It's hard to tell. Rated: 1.5/5 Jun 25, 2008 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Penelope is a delightful and imaginative little movie, adorned with plenty of good-intentioned morals. Rated: 3/4 Sep 6, 2023 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins A rather childish blend of comedy, romance, and the predictable unearthing of morals and prejudices. Rated: 3/10 Nov 28, 2020 Full Review Michael Dequina TheMovieReport.com This quirky, snarky contemporary fairy tale could have been a family blockbuster. Alisa A This is my favorite movie. It's not the best movie ever made. It's silly and sometimes a little cringe-worthy. The script is not surprising. There is no action, no explosion, no unexpected plot twist. You won't learn anything. It's a little movie that is relatively unknown. But, my favorite just the same. The acting is good - some real star power here: Catherine O'Hara, Peter Dinklage, James McAvoy, Christina Ricci and Reese Witherspoon. They do a great job. The sets are whimsical, especially the lighting; the street fair looks like a magic carnival, the poker hall looks like a seedy smoke filled world where people go to lose time, Penelope's room looks like a time capsule to a lonely childhood. The wardrobe is fabulous. I have always wanted Penelope's coat. The clothing is dreamy, something you might find in the real world, but somehow outside the normal conception of daily wear. The theme of true love is simple, predictable, and cozy. There is nothing groundbreaking here. As an only child though, the message lands with me every single time I watch the movie. It makes me feel better about being so often alone as a child. It makes me feel like my experience is not so unrelatable. I watch this movie any time I'm sick or not feeling well in some way. By the end of it, I'm always smiling. If you're looking for something cute, uncomplicated, sweet, and silly - this is the one. Get yourself a nice cup of tea and your favorite snack, a fuzzy blanket, and step into this little post card world where happiness is a choice we can easily make. It might remind you that, even in the real world, we get to choose joy. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/22/24 Full Review Sarah B What's wrong with the critics? I loved this movie and have seen it several times. I liked James McAvoy and him and Christina Ricci have good chemistry, and I liked Peter Dinklage in it, he was probably my favorite character. It's been awhile so I forget the characters' names except for Penelope. And it had a good message and is a modern-day fairy tale. Spoiler: I liked how Peter's character at the end is about to take a picture and he decides not to, which was a secondary message in the movie to accepting yourself but is really relevant to our time; just let people have privacy and also not every part of your life has to be on camera. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/04/24 Full Review Augusta D The kind of whimsical that gives you butterflies every time you watch it. If you like Amèlie or other similarly fairytale-esque films, you’ll enjoy this. Christina Ricci and James McAvoy have undeniable chemistry. It’s a movie I watch again and again! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/23/24 Full Review Victoria T Its fairly generic, I almost felt like I'd seen it before. The cast was good but overall it was just... fine. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/24/24 Full Review Dinos K A romantic modern fairy tale, good acting from McAvoy (he convinced me as a gambler). Little "Wednesday" was cute Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/30/23 Full Review Kalissa H It was silly and unrealistic--not just because of the snout--most of the time. Despite that, for some reason I enjoyed it. It does have a great message about loving yourself, so that is a positive. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/28/23 Full Review Read all reviews
