[The Boys in the Band] is much wittier and funnier than the comparatively frantic and frenzied shouting matches devised by Messrs. Guttenberg, Korn and Kirkwood. Go to Full Review

It's another world now, which is why Kirkwood's play, adapted to the screen by actor Steve Guttenberg, feels so moldy and out of date. Go to Full Review

In 1975, the idea of a straight man tying up a gay burglar was exotic, darkly humorous and sexually charged. In director/star Steve Guttenberg's new film version, it comes off as no big deal. Go to Full Review

steve h 06/27/2022 Having seen a few stage productions of this story, I was convinced it was one of those plays like "The Importance of Being Earnest", which is to say, even a bad production would be great entertainment. WRONG! Steve Guttenberg's little vanity project has sucked all the life out of it and made it boring, boring, boring, and, apparently heterosexual. The only thing that could save it now would be a remake by someone with a clue, like John Cameron Mitchell. Or Ed Wood. ANYBODY. See more 07/06/2014 Having read the late James Kirkwood's play and having seen a production of it, I wanted to like this movie. The acting and direction are good enough. Alterations Gutenberg made to Kirkwoods story are the problem. The twist in Kirkwood's play is that the burglar is gay and makes Jimmy question his own sexuality before the night ends. This part of the story was removed from the film. The ending a straight guy and his gay burglar becoming buddies is just plain silly. Perhaps playing gay was too much for Gutenberg. If so, he should never have taken on the part. See more 05/28/2011 Garbage - complete waste of time. Guttenberg is very disappointing and the writing is just horrendous. I understand this was a play before a movie - hopefully the play was better. See more 03/03/2011 Randomly funny movie but not quite funny or sharp enough. See more 04/02/2009 The book is absolutely much more better than the movie! It is hard to call the movie as a dark comedy though the book is. At the end I waited him to say that this was the book he wrote but he didn't... See more 08/30/2008 Loved it. This guy who's having a horrible day/life catches a cat bugler and is able to take out some frustration. See more Read all reviews
