Eager to see the results of his experimental -- and unfinished -- time travel project before he runs out of funding, physicist Sam Beckett (Scott Bakula) activates his machine and tests it on himself. When he comes to, he's leaped into the body of a test pilot circa 1956. With the assistance of his friend Al (Dean Stockwell), who appears to him as a hologram, Sam realizes that the pilot died during a test flight, but Sam has the chance to change history and save the pilot's life.
