Critics Consensus

Ravenous tries bringing cannibal horror into an Old West setting, ending up with an uneven blend that will fail to satisfy most fans of either genre.

Stephen Thompson AV Club Ravenous will doubtless find some sort of cult following, but that cult will be following a lousy, ill-conceived movie. Oct 29, 2019 Full Review Simon Abrams Slant Magazine I]f anyone could make a good adaptation of either of Lansdale's Jonah Hex comic mini-series or his great standard "Incident On and Off a Mountain Road," it's Bird and Griffin. Oct 29, 2019 Full Review Simon Braund Empire Magazine Antonia Bird's pitch black comedy is a patchily hilarious triumph. But the queasy and squeamish have been warned. (Substack) Fans of Hannibal will enjoy the mordant humor and gross, yet slick visuals (and its allusions to the Wendigo myth). Feb 13, 2024 Full Review Rob Gonsalves Rob's Movie Vault That a major studio (20th Century-Fox) gave this a wide release, despite its gonzo premise and lack of stars, is heartening; that this noble experiment has tanked on arrival is discouraging Rated: A- Sep 2, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Fascinating is how Ravenous occupies various genres throughout and yet never completely gives in to any one of them—it's a ride in that sense. Billiam F I was intrigued by the plot, but the disjointed soundtrack just felt very out of place, and really did not help me to immerse myself into the viewing experience of the film. And it pains me to say such a thing, especially when I found out that one of the contributors of the soundtrack was none other that the primary music contributor of the Gorillaz himself, Damon Albarn. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/25/24 Full Review Allan L Sometimes a movie is released at the wrong time. This is one of those movies and this is the time to watch. I watched this by accident many years ago and just recently caught it for free on you tube. Beautifully filmed with great acting and a musical score that just works. It must be said that this is a mature movie that does contain graphic violence so, say no to the kiddos and if you are squeamish then there are other movies. I happen to enjoy mature themed movies when they are well made and this one is. Enjoy. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/13/24 Full Review Alison J It's perfectly weird. I get why critics don't like it, but it scratches an indescribable itch for me. It also helps that Guy Pearce and Robert Carlyle make the weirdness believable. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/30/24 Full Review Lorenzo Z Absolutely riveting, all star cast, great acting and gripping musical score. Most horror movies aspire to deliver the punch to the gut Ravenous delivers Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/15/24 Full Review Jamie R Basically a flawless horror film. Incredibly scary folk horror. Windigo mytholgoy! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/24/24 Full Review Alec B A mess but a memorable one. The score is fantastically offbeat. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/28/24 Full Review Read all reviews
