Anton Bitel Little White Lies Revenge of the Ninja appropriates part of its form from the then-voguish slasher ("What is this, Halloween?", a character is heard to ask), and part from the gangster flick. Jan 17, 2016 Full Review James Kendrick Q Network Film Desk the action flows well enough, and the only time the film grinds to a halt is when drama or character conflict is involved Rated: 2.5/4 Sep 30, 2024 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews Director Sam Firstenberg delivers an exceedingly hit-and-miss actioner that remains unable, generally speaking, to become the enthralling work he's obviously intended... DanTheMan 2 Swiftly dispensing with everything that didn't work with Cannon's last Ninja outing, Revenge of the Ninja gets on with delivering an orgy of ninjutsu and everything else you could want from a film like this. By trimming the fat, taming the ninja myth-making and offering up some truly incredible set pieces full of wall-to-wall thrills, it's all given a propulsive energy by director Sam Firstenberg, whose style is tight and effective, always knowing where the focus should be. Moving at a blistering pace, the constantly bombastic martial arts battles are brilliantly choreographed and staged; crucially, they're also impeccably shot, with the camera placement and editing showcasing the skills of the performers rather than disguising them in a blitz of bewildering angles and edits. Presenting us with crazier stunts, 80s slasher levels of blood and perhaps the most important bit of ninja lore: only a Ninja can stop a Ninja. It certainly raised the bar for ninja cinema to the point where everyone and their grandmothers are getting in on the ninjutsu action. All the while promoting Sho Kosugi to the lead, a stroke of genius, as he makes for a very engaging lead in a quietly charismatic performance, which is thankfully matched by a tremendous supporting cast, including Kosugi's son Kane and a bopping soundtrack. An effortlessly blended mix of unwavering energy, charisma and brutality, Revenge of the Ninja throws all its remaining sanity out the window for some truly delirious and thoroughly ridiculous fun, making good on its title in copious spades. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/10/25 Full Review Jens B In the opening massacre, a child gets a throwing star right in the head – that already gave me a good feeling that Cannon's second ninja film would be a step up from the first. And I wasn't disappointed! My highlight was the little boy (Sho Kosugi's real son) who also gets to fight his way through hordes of enemies. The entire fight choreography is actually well done and imaginative. And there are a few nice bursts of violence thrown in for good measure. Secretly, I'm really looking forward to finally watching "Ninja III – The Domination." Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/09/25 Full Review Eddie Z 80s cheese never tasted so good. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/23/25 Full Review Aaron G Come on. This is an ‘80’s Ninja movie. And of all the’80’s Ninja movies, this one is the best. Sho Kosugi is very believable in his portrayal of a Ninja 🥷🏻, and is in fact a practitioner of Ninjitsu. If you’re expecting an Academy Award nominee, you’re probably going to be disappointed. But if you go into this knowing what it is, you’re going to love it. I guarantee it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/02/24 Full Review Audience Member What an incredibly nonsensical fun ass Ninja movie only Cannon Film Group could make. The kid fights were the best, Kane Kosugi was a star at 6 years old. Also the best photographed Salt Lake City I've ever seen on film (it's the only film I've seen filmed there). Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Best of it's kind. Period. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Read all reviews
