Francois Truffaut Arts (France) More clever than John Ford, Anthony Mann makes westerns less literary and less theatrical but more subtle. The characters seem more real and the relationships between them more true. Audience Member Fairly involving war Western. Managing to make Jed the hero after he starts out acting like he wants to rape Corrina ... and having her initially resist but then sort of succumb to his "rough charm" ... wow, I had forgotten that the gender politics of Hollywood were ever quite ... this. The colonel who is trying to prove something and is probably gonna get everybody killed is certainly relatable and up-to-date. I suppose the character of his lieutenant, who realizes he is deeply wrong but feels like he has to hold up the order of the Army, is a fairly good reflection of post WWII discussions about "just following orders." And this part of it is interesting enough, because he does have a point. Enforcing the colonel's orders seems like it could lead to disaster, but just taking things into his own hands seems like it could get bad too. Of course this is one of those Westerns that doesn't do anything to humanize the position of the Indians, who are in fact probably fighting a losing battle to preserve a sliver of sovereignty that is slipping away across the region. Even if they win this battle, surely their commanders see the writing on the wall of the next few years. The central conflict here is engaging, but while parts of it felt fresh other parts felt really hamstrung by "product of the time" vision. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member 160701: Treachery abounds at Fort Shallan. A decent film that made me struggle with finding a likeable character. It was a good thing Gus (James Whitmore) appeared at the beginning. He was a friendly western face and generally not touched by the darkness of The Last Frontier. Though the film ends with a strangely upbeat atmosphere, the story and it's main character Jeb Cooper (Victor Mature) leave a lot to be desired. Though a lot of focus is on the leadership of Colonel Frank Marston (a cool Robert Preston), I'm not really sure Marston's moral compass is as off as his wife's and the constantly drunk Cooper. Decent old Calvary vs Indians film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member another good western from Anthony Mann. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Western that can please, but the story is loose throughout and the characters have little depth.
