Critics Consensus

A life-affirming, if saccharine, epic treatment of a spirit-lifting figure in sports history.

Victoria J Oct 12 It's really not very good. The script was embarrassing in some places, characters weren't likable, and not enough of the horse. See more Tyler S @tylerking24 Aug 29 Pretty straight forward film. Nothing flashy, but nothing I really disliked. Felt kinda slow at times, but it stayed committed to the story. Now I'm gonna do some research on the actual Seabiscuit. See more Trou d Jul 25 I'm a little late, I know. I never watched it before because I thought it wouldn't be my cup of tea, and I was right. Still, I have to give it four stars, partly because there is no three-and-a-half stars, but mostly for the following reasons: Some movies are good because they did a lot of things right. This one is good because they didn't do a lot of things wrong. First and foremost, the horse remains a horse throughout, an animal, however noble and trainable he might be. Second, there is no half-baked love story shoehorned in for the Maguire character; they stick to his career. Third, they didn't milk the emotional parts the way movies so often do, plucking your heartstrings while groping for your wallet. Fourth, they kept the conflict on the track without trying to work in some lame social engineering despite its being set in the Great Depression. It didn't get five stars because it didn't sing, it didnt move me the way the great movies do. It was a modest look at a shining moment in sports history, and it was entertaining and watchable.
