Set in 1799, "Sleepy Hollow" is based on Washington Irving's classic tale "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Faithful to the dreamy custom-bound world that Irving paints in his story, the film mixes horror, fantasy and romance and features an extraordinary cast of characters that dabble in the supernatural.

Wendy Ide Times (UK) The Washington Irving tale is a perfect fit for the gothic sensibility that characterises Tim Burton as a film-maker. Nov 28, 2023 Full Review Jan Stuart Newsday Pickering's wide, tremulous eyes reflect the film's lurid appeal to youthful terrors. Rated: 3.5/4 Jan 3, 2018 Full Review Nell Minow Common Sense Media There are lots of slasher movies better than this. Rated: 2/5 Dec 28, 2010 Full Review Chance Solem-Pfeifer Willamette Week Sleepy Hollow marked the sunset of Burton’s can’t-miss era—still-able-to-shock preexisting material full of indelible imagery and original design. Dec 19, 2024 Full Review Kristy Strouse Wonderfully Weird and Horrifying A supernatural splendor, gorgeously morose, Sleepy Hollow is a dark horse amid Burton’s filmography. Dec 10, 2023 Full Review Chuck Klosterman Akron Beacon Journal All the trees are wickedly gnarled, the sky is never blue, and nothing seems real For a story about a headless assassin in 1799, the setting is completely flawless. The story, however, is not. Rated: 2.5/4 Oct 28, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Mr. Hollywood Tim Burton great choice for this interpretation of this classic story. Greta visuals and great film Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/14/24 Full Review Emily M The movie was okay but there were times where I thought it was dumb because it took long for them to figure out how to find his head. So it made it dumb. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/30/24 Full Review Jackson87 C What stands out most in Sleepy Hollow is the atmospheric tension that builds throughout. From the fog-shrouded forests to the eerie headless horseman, the movie keeps you on the edge of your seat with a perfect balance of suspense and macabre humor. The art direction and costume design are superb, immersing viewers in the haunted, mysterious world of 18th-century America. It’s a must-watch for fans of Tim Burton, gothic horror, or anyone looking for a beautifully crafted, spine-tingling tale. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/14/24 Full Review Dallas H It's been several years since I last watched this movie. I remember watching it in the movie theater when it was first released. Upon reflection, this would be the most straight-up horror film Tim Burton has ever done. His directing resume has been light on the traditional horror elements and heavy on the gothic overtones. I have completely forgotten the number of recognizable character actors who appear in this movie. Twenty-five years from its original release, I think this flick still holds up pretty well. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/14/24 Full Review Bradley G Sleepy Hollow is out of all the Tim Burton films I have ever seen has good and bad bits but this one adds quite a bit of creativity with an urban myth that brings a twist. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/13/24 Full Review Larry K A little bit confusing at times but a pretty great movie Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/07/24 Full Review Read all reviews
