The Slipper and the Rose is the most pleasant surprise of the season, not because it is magnificent, but because it is simply a good children's film. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

The main appeal on this one is the music and all the humor. Go to Full Review

A cutely off-kilter riff on a familiar story, with just enough peculiar fascination with the unexplored ramifications of that story to feel like its own thing. Go to Full Review

Sarah G May 14 There are movies you watch, enjoy, and forget. Then, once in a rare while, there is a film that quietly slips into your soul and imprints on your heart. I was maybe seven or eight when I first watched The Slipper and the Rose. I didn’t know what it was called at the time, just knew it was about Cinderella, and there was a prince, and ballgowns, and a Fairy Godmother who didn’t look like the ones in cartoons. But something about it felt so much more comforting to me. I recently revisited this film and I have been thinking about it nonstop. From the very first scene, I was mesmerized by how much detail was put into the lavish sets, the stunning costumes, and the utterly enchanting music by the Sherman Brothers. Every note felt like a warm embrace and every lyric felt meaningful. I still feel like twirling around whenever “He Danced With Me / She Danced With Me" comes on. This film was also written and portrayed beautifully. Richard Chamberlain’s Prince Edward isn't just another prince charming, he’s a very layered character that yearns for more freedom in his life and we get to see more of his personality and vulnerabilities. And Cinderella, played by Gemma Craven, is strong in her gentleness and resilience. The Fairy Godmother, played by Annette Crosbie, plays her not as some aloof sorceress, but as deeply feeling character with hopes and heartaches of her own. It actually angers me knowing how underrated this film is. It deserved to be iconic. The music alone is good enough to rival any Disney classic. I cannot recommend this movie enough! Many people know the 1950s Disney version of Cinderella but this one goes to a more massive scale of its storytelling. Starring a large British cast, the writers of Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and the Jungle Book and directed by Brian Forbes. The story goes as follows with Cinderella living a painful life with her wicked stepmother and two evil stepsisters. The kingdom needs Prince Edward to marry as soon as possible. His father the King couldn't care less if his son married for love, only for duty and responsibility. The fairy godmother comes in but looks more like a regular person. Marriage should be for convenience of love, not convenience, This movie is almost 2 and a half hours and keep in mind there's a song number every couple of minutes. They hardly take a break. But if you want a more melody filled take on the fairy tale then this is up your alley. This also has more real world ramifications to be looked at too in its setting. Chamberlain is great as the prince, and Gemma Craven holds her own. See more Read all reviews
