What to Know

Critics Consensus

Its script doesn't quite carry the dramatic heft of his earlier work, but Park Chan-wook's Stoker showcases his eye for sumptuous imagery and his affection for dark, atmospheric narratives populated by mysterious characters.

Tiffany Taylor Bitch Media Thankfully, this director dislikes sentimentality. Park takes these beloved figures and unceremoniously exposes their failings. Jan 15, 2021 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire There is a freedom to his filmmaking; he's trying things, odd moods and unexpected edits and unconventional compositions. He likes to keep things popping, and you can't help but respond to the wit and playfulness of his style. Jun 21, 2016 Full Review Wesley Morris Grantland It's too safe, too knotty, too wastefully handsome, too dull. Jan 3, 2014 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand ... I was captivated by this world and by Park’s mesmerizing mix of the visceral and ethereal. Oct 28, 2023 Full Review Trace Thurman Horror Queers Podcast A case of style over substance, but the style we have is exceptional. Rated: 3.5/5 Sep 5, 2023 Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast Stunningly gorgeous and more than a little subversive, the technical prowess of Chan-wook's craft elevates Wentworth Miller's Baby Dexter premise into glossy, decadent art. If only there were more Kidman! Rated: 4/5 Aug 30, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

noa r so disappointed. by the end i was definitely amused from the timeline and storyline, though some would find it clever, it felt pretentious. i love gothic cinema, but this was not the best. mia wasikowska was fantastic in this role though, so witty and unhinged. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/10/24 Full Review Lúcio Leonardo P I thought the story was one, but it was completely different since the trailer makes you believe that the plot will go down a path that doesn't exist, so I think this film talks about people's psyches, about the awakening of the dark side of each one, which could make a beautiful story, but here, we have something a bit still, a bit strange, a bit confusing until its ending. It can please or irritate depending on your mood. Director Park Chan-wook tries to maintain a suspenseful atmosphere but doesn't develop it very well. Actress Mia Wasikowska's performance is perfect, as she plays India Stoker, an isolated teenager, few friends, with the "dark side of the force" awakening. And the setting to develop the story was very well chosen. I also thought the choice of the title in Portuguese was good. And what a beautiful "lost" teenager... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/02/24 Full Review Sreemoyee D Matthew Goode's performance was electric. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/28/23 Full Review Pam B A bit disappointing. As there didn't turn out to be a supernatural element to things the dad's fears and bond with her uncle seemed remarkably convenient. It felt like the initial hints of a connection to the (almost) eponymous Bram were all that were holding a lot of it together. A shame. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/15/23 Full Review Devin B Great twists and turns with solid acting to go along with it! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/09/23 Full Review Valerii Ege D A different kind of Stepfather movie. What made me wonder is that for a simple story movie has a huge casting. Like Nicole Kidman, Mia Wasikowska, Matthew Goode. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews
