Jeffrey M. Anderson Combustible Celluloid The movie's ending, with its clash between home life and frontier life, comes quite close to 'The Searchers' territory. Rated: 3.5/4 Jul 17, 2020 Full Review Michael E. Grost Classic Film and Television John Ford apprentice work, with interesting subjects of water rights and private property Aug 22, 2014 Full Review Tim Brayton Antagony & Ecstasy Has pretty much one thing going for it only, and that's Harry Carey... look for the signs of future mastery here, and you look in vain. Rated: 5/10 Mar 31, 2014 Full Review Fernando F. Croce CinePassion One of the earliest building blocks in the John Ford pyramid, but first of all a consistently lovely cowpoke yarn Apr 2, 2010 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member master director john ford's directorial debut Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Straight Shooting displays Ford's gift for pacing. The narrative never lags, even as Ford slows down occasionally for a reflective moment (e.g. Molly with her brother's dish). The flip of Harry's character half-way through underlines Ford's sympathy for the underdog and for the innovator. The ending has apparently been changed from its more appropriate original, which left Harry alone, outside the community. The new ending, added in 1925, leaves the film feeling false.
