When John Connor (Jason Clarke), leader of the human resistance against Skynet, sends Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back to 1984 to protect his mother, Sarah (Emilia Clarke), from a Terminator assassin, an unexpected turn of events creates an altered timeline. Every Movie Has a Lesson

As flashy as it is with tremendous and eye-popping special effects, it has created an extremely convoluted mess of merged timelines and revisionist storytelling that treads all over what made the 1984 original and superior 1991 sequel so great.

Terminator Genisys was a mess of a movie that struggled to find its footing. Despite its efforts to be epic and new, it failed miserably, largely due to its disjointed plot, the original characters from the first two movies were reimagined in a way that felt forced and unappealing, and the mischaracterization of John Connor, which felt like a betrayal to the original character. Grading: D

Genisys was released in theatres in 2015 and again stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the iconic Terminator, Jason Clarke as John Connor, Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, and Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese. The film is set in 2029 and John Connor sends Reese back to guard his mother but a temporal thingy happens and when he arrives he finds that the timeline has changed and that a Terminator raised Sarah. But no fear because Sarah has built a time machine and wants to travel to the future to stop Skynet herself. We get some callbacks to the first film, a bunch of science mumbo jumbo on temporal mechanics and time travel, and of course a bunch of dumb fights with a really hokey ending that I honestly laughed at. Emilia Clarke was not good here (loved her in GOT though), Arnold was fine since he's been playing the same character for years now, and Jai Courtney wasn't annoying. The movie however was not very good and my least favorite in the franchise.

Terminator Genisys (2015) has a very peculiar and silly flavor, there are some things that are interesting to follow and others that are not. The story of this new chapter in the franchise is quite confusing and difficult to understand.

This entry in the Terminator franchise receives undue criticism. Some of the science mumbo jumbo is stale and doesn't make sense, but Genisys thrills when it wants to. The effects are believable, such as watching a nuke destroy San Francisco. Jai Courtney is quite admirable as Kyle Reese, and J.K. Simmons' subtle comedic turn adds a nice touch of levity.
