What to Know

Critics Consensus

Mired in its muddled mythology, Terminator: Genisys is a lurching retread that lacks the thematic depth, conceptual intelligence, or visual thrills that launched this once-mighty franchise.

Sarah Marshall Bitch Media This film should be more on-point than ever, since technology has taken over our lives. But rather than actively antagonizing us, technology simply allows us easy ways to indulge in laziness and cruelty. Jan 28, 2021 Full Review Nick Schager The Daily Beast To watch Genisys is to see the franchise become a figurative embodiment of the Terminators themselves: convinced of its own superior vision of the future, it tramples upon the dusty skeletons of the forefathers it's slaughtered to achieve it. Oct 23, 2015 Full Review Emily St. James Vox The Terminator franchise has forgotten what made The Terminator and Terminator 2 so great. Rated: 1.5/5 Oct 23, 2015 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson As flashy as it is with tremendous and eye-popping special effects, it has created an extremely convoluted mess of merged timelines and revisionist storytelling that treads all over what made the 1984 original and superior 1991 sequel so great. Rated: 2/5 Sep 4, 2023 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine I found this fifth film genuinely unwatchable. Rated: 2/10 Jun 6, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies A ‘Terminator’ film brings with it certain high expectations (from some audiences), and “Genisys” doesn’t meet them. Nick R It lacks in just about everything that made this franchise so great to begin with. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/13/24 Full Review Audience Member I want the old actor, why change actor? Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/08/24 Full Review James B While it can be confusing at times Terminator genesis proves to be entertaining with callbacks to previous films although it is definitely loosing its edge. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/26/24 Full Review G M "Terminator Genisys" brings a unique twist to the franchise by embracing the multiverse concept, adding a fresh angle to the time-travel narrative. Arnold Schwarzenegger shines once again as the aging T-800, bringing both nostalgia and new depth to his role. However, the shift to a PG-13 rating does diminish some of the franchise's gritty essence, and while Jason Clarke does a commendable job as John Connor, the decision to make him the villain feels questionable. Overall, it's an enjoyable entry, but it doesn’t quite capture the magic of the original or "T2." Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/05/24 Full Review Aaron C I had to give this film a second chance, I remember giving up on this film when it originally came out because I thought it was part of the same timeline as the other films. As a standalone Terminator film it's not too bad, but I just couldn't get behind John Connor being a bad guy. With it being a reimagined version of the original Terminator, I think maybe not having Arnie play The Terminator would of been better. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/02/24 Full Review Korra N Some truly bad acting, writing and direction keep Terminator: Genisys from being even remotely fun or enjoyable.
