Audience Member This could have been a gem if instead of Rita Tushingham they'd cast someone who suited the character Ruth Prawer Jhabvala had written. Someone unquestionably attractive & therefore irresistible to the Guru, like the film's poster depicts - also she needs to have chemistry with Michael York. A classic case of one miscast actor ruining a whole work. I felt the exact same curse afflicted the very last Merchant Ivory film. Maybe worth seeing just for York's floral outfits and Tushingham's monstrous eye makeup and York's even more ridiculous Cockney accent. The Guru himself is not defined correctly like in the screenplay. He needs to have been more like Ravi Shankar, vain and deluded, unable to resist the Westerners who offers themselves. Brenda Davies Sight & Sound The central character naturally is the guru himself, and it is here that Ivory and his leading actor have brought off a brilliantly funny and touching character study. Mar 31, 2020 Full Review Penelope Houston The Spectator Perhaps Ivory's real talent is for the sort of farewells which everyone welcomes with rather more relief than they allow themselves to admit.
